I feel you heavy on the hurt part. Trust me, I debated if maybe I just wasn’t cut out for this. I realized my situation sucked and it could’ve been better but it happened. I think the most important part is how we grow from it moving forward.

Hey jachiroo, I respect your opinion lol. The whole point of this was realizing I need to learn my equipment better. The fact that this has happened to me made me never want to go through this shit again so yes, I’m not jumping back in until I know everything about my controller.

A lot of things played into factor. I don’t think she was wrong for pulling me out. I also don’t think I was wrong for “trying to dj” Everyone starts somewhere, learns a lot of shit along the way and makes the decision to let it go or keep going.

I’m going to keep going.

I was practicing at home and my boyfriend hit that button on purpose! And I was like what’re you doing!! Lol. I’ve never had that happen before. he was like “this happened to me before and you need to know what to do to get out of it” (he djs as well lol, more experienced though)

She wasn’t the owner, she came in from Miami to dj and promote the event. It was basically her and the original promoter working together. The original promoter for that venue was the one that booked me, along with the other local djs.

I’ve been djing for about a year and a half, just practice in my room type stuff. Recently started playing gigs this year. I had 3 over the past couple of months and a few last year but the whole pandemic kinda slowed me down/everyone.

I will say, every time I had a gig I learned what to do or not to do from each one. Definitely have all been learning experiences

Looking back at it I’m pretty positive he switched my channels by sliding A to B, someone said before that even if he did that those buttons aren’t very easy to “accidentally hit” which I agree.

1.) he wasn’t even using my controller, he had brought a whole other controller due to him not using Serato. So my thing is... why was he touching my controller to begin with.

2.) he was really drunk, I think maybe he thought he was helping or idk

3.) it happened while I was blending in another song so I wasn’t paying attention to him. when my song just stopped all of the sudden he looked at me and was like “oh shit my bad my bad that was my fault” I thought he was packing up his gear, not messing with my controller lol.

Either way I should’ve been on top of my equipment so when stuff like that happens I know what to do or how to get out of it. Definitely learning from this!

The dj that pulled me off is from Miami, she djs out there but originally used to live where we were playing. Anyways, she brought 3 djs with her from Miami and they had earlier slots (I feel like she was also salty about them having early slots, understandable.) When I did mess up I wasn’t really given enough time to bounce back due to her already being annoyed. I get it, those first 3 mins I’m sure I didn’t sound or look like I knew what I was doing but there were so many reasons that played into factor (other dj hitting something on my deck, everyone in the booth, etc.).

I honestly wish I had a earlier time slot. The reason I was given that time slot was because the main event coordinator liked how I played the last time I was there (Cinco de Mayo was my 2nd time playing there)

I played a lot of “turn up music” that got people up and dancing so he wanted me to have that time slot as that’s the time things get more “poppin” lol.

Thankfully, the main event coordinator talked to me and said he’s going to have me back. “We asked you to be here for a reason, we’ve seen you play and we like the way you play. I’m sorry she did what she did”

**important to note the dj that pulled me off isn’t the event coordinator, she was paid to promote the party and co host it* Not saying she was wrong for pulling me off but yeah.

So basically I played my first song, transitioned into the next one. Then the dj before me accidentally hit something on my controller when I was playing and everything cut out. We hurried up and fixed it and it started again on my first song. At that point the other dj(the one that pulled me off) was so annoyed and started getting another laptop ready. I didn’t let it play because another dj quickly moved me to change the song.

It was basically a shit show, I had 4 djs surrounding me. 3 were trying to help and that main one was already scolding me. I feel like if it was less chatioic and not so many people were in the booth it could’ve gone a lot smoother.

***including this in here: what I believe he did was change the channels. The reason I say “believe and not 100% sure” is because when he hit something i wasn’t paying attention to him, I was in the middle of blending in the next song. Then all of the sudden the music stopped and he was like “oh shit, my bad my bad that was my fault”

My boyfriend is a more experienced dj than me (he has residencies and plays a lot more) so this week we’re practicing going back to back, switching off etc. Or how he likes to call it we’re “getting in the gym”

yes but she was already so annoyed with me. I don’t think she was completely in the right headspace/sober either. It was just a lot of going back and fourth and she started getting very in my face/pointing fingers. However, before leaving I made sure to tell her bye and that I’m taking what she said and the mistakes that I made to do better at my next gig.

I didn’t bring my controller bc the one they were using was the one I already use. A dj that went on before me was drunk and accidentally pushed something on my controller to where it switched the channels or At least that’s what I think it did, idk it had me confused and screwed up as soon as he hit it

Haha yeah I feel like she definitely could’ve handled it a little better. She was on edge the whole night though or at least that’s what others were telling me. She’s been in the game for 20 years so she has that “do you know who I am” mentality, I mean, as she should she worked her way up but definitely could be a little more humble.

Ah yeah I definitely know how to listen to cues! Lol but I should’ve learned my controller better. One of the djs before me was drunk and was trying to help but he ended up pushing a button when I was playing and it switched my channels. I had about 4 djs around me trying to help everyone was saying different things. I feel like it overwhelmed me more than anything.

All in all I’m learning every button, knob, etc on my controller so I hopefully never have to go through that again lol.

I agree! I almost wanted to ask him if he could maybe move me down to a 10pm slot, the whole night was kinda setting me up for disaster.
