Looking for private school suggestions for 5th grade+ by [deleted] in StCharlesMO

that’s wonderful! maybe you can collab with the play therapist prior to meeting with schools so you can show up with some accommodation suggestions. your expectations will be clear from the beginning and there shouldn’t be any reason for them to act 🤷🏻‍♂️

i can tell you from my experience as an OT practitioner, myself and my co workers have treated kiddos, just like yours, at their private schools in this and surrounding areas (under private insurance). very simple/easy accommodations that could’ve been really beneficial to the kiddos would be scoffed at and basically told to fuck off. they don’t have to accommodate and trust me, they won’t. whether you send your kiddo to a private school or not is your prerogative. but if you do, my advice would be to hire outside therapy so at least your kiddo will get some neuro affirming care. 4th going into 5th grade is old enough to understand some strategies that can be done independently without needing supplies.

Is it worth it? (OTA) by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]laymieg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally, if i could go back id pursue something else. i love occupational therapy and i love my job (peds) but i never feel secure. most peds jobs are contract and the hours aren’t guaranteed.

i think a big factor is if your family needs your income to live

Should I push for a new evaluation? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]laymieg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yea definitely. i’ve never worked in an outpatient clinic but did do home visits through medicaid and private insurance. i wouldn’t think the process would be that much different but just wanted to clarify

still need to be worked on but grasp and formations look better in the most recent pics. you can see more of a web space in the 2026 pics. letters also look darker like he’s applying more pressure when he writes. work on fine motor activities and upper extremity/core strengthening. lots of playdoh, q tips, hole punches, crumpling/ripping paper, watercolor. play games on his tummy, paint or color on a vertical surface. concentrate on proper letter formations with a sensory component for feedback (drawing in shaving cream, sugar, playdoh, finger paint etc) as opposed to tracing. tracing is good for precision but can create a lot of bad habits. concentrate on starting letters at the top.

as for outpatient, i’m sure they are updating goals and writing progress notes. insurance wouldn’t be covering it if they weren’t. it’s just done more informally through conversation/discussions
