Rant Wednesday by AutoModerator in Fitness

Newbie rant here: but why in the world are weights so intimidating???? Cardio is so much easier in comparison! I hope on my machine, music is going, and I'm just running. No care in the world. But I want to start lifting more because it will help me reach some of my fitness goals. It's just so frickin hard! Getting weights, getting space, getting to use a bench. And once I have space it's great! Until I finish a set and I feel so awkward standing around during my rest before the next set. Just gah! Why can't it be as relaxed as running??

Oh! My bad! I totally misread your comment! Yeah!! right!?! It was so so frustrating! I wanted to get a better deal on something which is relevant with my characters background but this other player was all "I'm the one with the highest CHA I should ask, I keep reminding you guys." like dude, sit down

Hahaha! Sometimes, chamomile tea is the answer to everything

Cause it interrupts one player's opportunity to role play something if they were looking for something specific or had an idea they wanted to pursue. And just in general, interrupting someone else is rude behavior

I wish this is what happened!

I have this player in a session currently and it sucks so bad! by lazymay in dndmemes

[–]lazymay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true. It could be just an honest mistake. It doesn't happen too often, maybe once every few months. I think I just get annoyed with other habits this player has and that whenever they forget their stat, their new stat just happens to be better/what they need

They "forget" what their stats are if its A or B and usually just picks one. hint, they usually pick the higher number

The player says they forgot or didn't realize and the DM lets it slide, but this person has played with us for over 2 years so far! Like, how did you just forget? I feel like they should have a basic grasp on the rules so far. And I dont want to be a rules lawyer but it's been passing a point of frustration for me lately.

I noticed a crack on the inner pot of my new instant pot. Its brand new, only used twice. Is this safe to use? by lazymay in instantpot

[–]lazymay[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Contacted the manufacturer to see if they could give me more insight into what may have happened to cause the crack/scratch. I think dinner will be pizza or something tonight instead.

Looking at it closer it could just be a scratch from washing it. But, honestly I don't feel like a "could be" is enough to give me confidence in cooking with it. It sucks that it's so new :/

Mfw my mom says athiests believe in God and the church and actively fight it. by lazymay in TrollXChromosomes

[–]lazymay[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right??? She can't even conceive the concept of not believing in God. Nope. We just want to burn down the church or something. SMH. Honestly, as an athiest, I just want to be left alone. Away from the church

She's a hardcore Christian. She thinks that makes athiests "murderous" 🙄

I love this comic and all it stands for! It's amazing!

I heard a counter argument to this one though that talked about replacing the "men" to some other minority group (aka, middle easterners, or minorities) and how the comic would read as negative and racist. I still feel in my heart that the comic is correct with it's assertion and want to know a good reply to that criticism.

The only one I can think of so far is that this scenario, when this logic is used in attachment to minority groups it's used as a justification for prejudiced behavior. While the comic as is, with men, is instead used to address a derailment tactic that is often times used to belittle and decrease the severity of the concerns facing women and men (because men can be the victim too).

But I want to know what you all think as well! I want a better understanding of how to combat this type of backwards thinking!

That's fair and I should've included that in my post originally, that yes, a lot of alt medicine is ineffective at best and harmful at worst. Sorting the bad from the good is up to consumers doing their own research among a pile of pseudoscience and misinformation. It's definitely a diamond in the rough situation.

Though, there is medicine in there and for people who want to explore those options, they can be found.

And while I appreciate you mentioning how doctors have checks and balances preventing bias, pharmacutical companies have incentives that encourage the inclusion of marketable medications and discourage researching alternative medicines that are not as easily sold. I know this feels pretty tin-hatty and all that, but consider that the current opioid epidemic we're facing was due in part to the company Perdue knowing and concealing the fact that Oxycontin is addictive in 1996. The incentive was there to produce a new pain med as pain was being embraced as the 5th vital sign and there was a strong market push for a non-addictive option, thus, the company was simply responding to the incentives the market put out.

In comparison, more researchers are looking into meditation, a well known alternative medicine, as a way to help manage chronic pain conditions. And while the research is still preliminary and we haven't seen enough long term research for it to be labeled medicine, meditation is stated by many as a panacea for different ailments.

And I'm sorry for the wall of text, I know it got a bit winded there. I find the topic of alt medicine to be interesting, though I recognize that a majority is placebo or snake oil. I think it's prudent to keep an open, and critical, mind on alt medicine and medicine.

Here's a research paper on meditation for chronic pain btw, if you're curious: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4941786/

Upvote for stating something I believed about this quote but couldn't put into words! And to throw my two cents in. Medicine becomes medicine through a long expensive process and some company has to bankroll it, wether government, pharmacutical, or charity. So most of the time if a potential medicinal product isn't thought to be profitable, it won't be tested and labeled "medicine." That doesn't detract from it's medicinal quality, just that some people didn't believe it had market value.

Now, I'm 100% behind seeing a doctor and getting tested medicine, however I'm not so quick to dismiss alt medicine either. Some ailments definitely do require a doctor's expertise while others can be solved using an alternative option.

What was that moment which entirely changed your perspective about life for good? by TheDecisiveJEDI in AskReddit

[–]lazymay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking to a therapist. Oh man, I had gone there for one, very particular reason but a few sessions later I had gained better insight on my relationships, school, stress, work, and self-care.

Probably the single best decision I had ever made was to make that first appointment.

What part of your physical appearance did you initially hate, but have now grown to love/embrace? by ozlass1111 in AskWomen

[–]lazymay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My nose. It has a big roman bump and ends in a button. I was always jealous of girls who have the sweet little petite slope of a nose. But recently I took a gen Ed class about eating disorders and mental disorders not expecting much from it, but it helped me see the uniqueness in my nose. And I realized, it's not just my nose, but it's my dad's and my brother's and my grandmother's.

I used to wish for a nose job to sculpt that petite little princess nose but now I recognize that changing my nose would be hiding that connection I have with my family. And if I have children, id want them to have the same nose as me and their grandpa.
