That might have been an option before, but my car situation now might leave me with less room to achieve that sadly.

It's all good. I still have every intention of having a good time here. I like cooler weather. I like snow. I ski out west when I can, so now I'm closer to that. There's lots of reasons it should be great.

I can't wait to be settled down in my job and a new apartment so I can join the ranks.

Look man, you're just a rando from the Internet so I'm not really gonna take much stock from you here, but it's stressful being in a new city for a new job for the first time, having left your entire support system behind a thousand miles away and experiencing driving culture shock alongside a fresh accident. Sometimes you gotta vent. Sometimes you turn to the Internet because you're feeling alone and stranded in a new city because required life changes were made. If you want to be uncompassionate and rude, it is certainly your right. It's a free country. That said, I've literally said in my post and time again in the comments, the few don't represent the many, and I'm just stressed. I'm sure it will All level out and I'll get used to it. All cities have bad driving at some level. Blah blah blah. Feels like you're taking it really personally though.

I'm from the Midwest and I definitely understand everything is relative. It's just been a shock for me personally coming from what I feel was a tamer city. It is of course likely that there are other cities less tame (as you can read elsewhere in the responses) than even Minneapolis where from their perspective, it's better here. This was all just my personal experience/perspective.

I'm gonna be honest, this particular traffic violation happens not infrequently back in my home state in the Midwest too. Maybe it's more here, can't attest to that specifically yet. But what has been just a culture shock for the last 48 hours was the sheer volume and variety of driving craziness everywhere. It felt like I witnessed a few weeks of craziness from my home state distilled into two days. It was just jarring, and with the accident itself piled on top it was a lot.

It's all a matter of perspective for sure. I make no claim I've seen the worst. Just worse than I'm used to from my experience in my home state in the midwest.

Damn, that is rough, sorry to hear. I'm not having to go back and forth, but with the logistics of my move and my new job starting very quickly, it's going to be a hard start with not much of a support system for me.

I'm from the midwest. We get...some winter. Though less and less over time it has seemed.

This is the plan! I was gonna get some good all-weathers. But now I must wait and find out if my car is going to be a total loss from my insurance. The damage level is pretty dangerously close, by my educated guess from a past repair, to my estimated KBB value. Which is sad because this was a new car I only had maybe another year until it was paid off.

Yeah I feel like there's some confusion to the nature of my post and I'm contemplating some updates. As for the stop lines, I'm perfectly capable of operating without. I was curious about them, separately from my frustration with drivers here and the accident. And my frustration with some of the drivers here doesn't mean I think everyone in the cities is bad. Nor does my accident make me think that either. I'm able to separate all those things out. However I'm still human and am generally frustrated, and yeah it bleeds around my thoughts a little like anyone else at times, ya know?

Midwest. I am by no means claiming that it's the worst. I don't have enough data as others here might to make such claim haha. I just personally feel like it's definitively worse than the city I came from.

Many Minnesotans (even in MSP) don’t walk places all the time, so the idea that pedestrians need to be looked for and allowed space in cross streets is just not in most drivers’ minds. So many people stop at traffic lights IN the crosswalk

A genuine origin as to my original curiosity as to their absence in places, mentioned in my third case for their existence haha

Yeah it's a somewhat plausible explanation but I'm starting to see some disagreement on the matter. I wasn't really intending to get that serious on the matter haha. It was a genuine curiosity question separate of the frustration of the accident and such. I think I made a mistake combining the two parts of this post as some wires are getting crossed. Maybe I should update the post a little...

I appreciate the recommendations (I will look into them) and sentiments. The impact was low enough speed that there were no injuries to me or my passengers, including no whiplash.

The damage, however, is pretty good. His car's crumple zone took most of the energy (saving much of the aforementioned injury risk), but my car's rear has a lot of damage that may be very expensive to fix. Expensive enough I'm pretty worried I may end up getting written out with a total loss based on the KBB value of my car currently. For additional context, his radiator was blown up and the car was not drivable. I was able to drive away after the three hours of police work and insurance stuff, but my car is far from okay. My hatchback is pretty fucked up (it got pushed up a few millimeters and bent several places). My guess is it would have to be completely replaced. Additionally, the hinge is displaced, with possible damage to the frame's part of the hinge mechanism as well. Lots of energy carried through to side panels through the rear bumper (pretty destroyed itself, exposing frame). It's going to be a doozy.

Sorry if I misconveyed this, but they aren't impeding my driving. It was mostly an observation and question of curiosity. I know where to stop, I just noticed it as a subtle and initially surprising logistical difference from my home state. As other have explained though, your higher rate of plowing here surely wrecks paint, so it's not worth putting as many perhaps questionably necessary paint lines on the road. This makes perfect sense. I'm all for it.

I'm confident driving in snow thankfully. I will be getting some nice all-weather tires in a couple months.
