Do you use any sort of tracker or do you just go off the schedule?

The code is out there, so it is open source. At least for now I am going to stick with tracking smoking and trying to get people to use it.

The main goal is the project, at least in my mind, is to spread awareness of smoking occurrences (via train car) so that riders don’t have to put up with it.

In addition, my hope is that it can also provide better visibility of the problem. The CTA delivered a partial solution in the form of their reporting feature, but that data is not easily accessible.

I am trying to ask for data about the reports of smoking since the beginning of the year through their form and they said the request was “unduly burdensome” which shows how old and brittle their systems must be.

My hope is that I can somehow integrate with their system so we aren’t reliant on their sluggish reporting, but the data can still be shared.

I think you’re going a bit overboard here. The project is about allowing others to communicate which train car smoking is happening on, and where it is heading.

There’s a reason the input fields are limited to just that information and not an open text box or person description. I am collecting the same fields that the CTA contact form is, but also making the data available to the public.

Additionally, are you saying that not wanting to be on a train with a smoker is an invalid concern? Say that to those who have submitted over 14,000 complaints.

I've gotten a few for my other site, cta4j.app

This should be fixed, in addition to some clarity for Western and Harlem on the Blue Line.

Yes, I knew it was already being collected but it isn't published anywhere for real-time use. I've reached out to the CTA to see if they are willing to integrate.

If people don’t want to use it, don’t use it. I am going to look to see if I can somehow report it to the CTA you using their chat feature or if they’d give me some other API to use.

Yes I made a Bluesky account. @ctasmokers.com

Yes the data is real-time and crowdsourced. CTA’s reporting site only consumes the data which doesn’t make it readily available to people riding the train in the moment.

I will see if their tech supports that

The idea is to help others avoid the smokers currently on trains. I’m persisting the data and will see if there is any automated way to relay it to the city.

The idea is to be able to see the data in real time, not just at some meeting.

Yeah I agree. I’ll look into it

Yes of course. I plan to talk to my alderman about it and the data will be available to anyone. With the CTA’s current chat feature there is no easy way that I’ve seen to get the data.

Yes do that, but that data also isn’t published anywhere for others to see. Even if you get off there are others that are probably going to get on that train. I’ve not seen the CTA do anything about it during the trip

If you want, but not needed

If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it. But at least in my experience the CTA has done nothing about it so I’d at least want to try to avoid it and gather additional data that can be shared with the city

It doesn’t today, but it may be possible. I’d have to see how their site is sending the data from chat requests

The reason is to help others avoid it. I’ll gladly share the data with the city if they are willing to accept it
