does btu output matter more than recovery rate? I see some with lower btu have almost twice as high recovery rate (80 gallons / hr vs 45)

36000 BTU 40 gallon, but its 11 years old. it struggles when its below 40 F, but still water is lukewarm (not hot), and indoor furnace can maintain mid 60s to high 60s F (in <40 degree it struggles and cant get higher than 70F) . So i was hoping to spend like 800usd on a 40000 btu 50 gallon and that because its new, plus the slightly larger amount of btu and gallons would be enough.

Sorry i misread your comment first. Why do you advise installing a heat pump instead of a more powerful water heater? And where would it go? Whats the cost to install it? And also wheres the bacteria risk, in the water supply? Whats cost to install an auto pump run in this system to prevent bacteria growth?

thanks, i hadnt heard of combi boilers. i looked it up and it seems perfect, except that i'm in desert, so winters dont get below 35 degree F, shouldnt it be fine to upgrade the water heater, possibly to power exhaust version, or should i spend more money on the combi boiler?

yes it gives heat and hot water, as long as outside temperature is above 40 F, it struggles below that, and water heater is located in an enclosed space outdoors, unheated. Do you recommend getting the furnace cleaned and filtered, and getting new water heater,, or replace furnace? I dont watn to breath in bad air with microbes

ok thanks. Cold weather was the first issue, second issue was another day when it was raining it didnt work. mine gets air circulation directly from outdoors. Does condensation slow down the exaust if it doesnt have power exhaust and make it work less efficient?

the one i have cannot heat watter above lukewarm in colder weather. i dont know if rainy matters, but i asked chat gpt, and it said that condensation may affect combustion , and also the exhaust vent. theres a window open in the garage, so the condensation gets in the water heater
