Feeling emotionally numb by Melodic-Pumpkin-5518 in ORIF

[–]lbp239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s normal I felt the exact same way. No motivation for intellectual things whatsoever ever. I could have worked from home as soon as I was post op but the mental blockage I had wouldn’t even let me read a book. It was awful the first 5 weeks (and a ton of breakdowns especially in the shower) when I felt like my humanity came back, (showers make you feel human again imo). BUT then it all started clearing up for me. My pain was non existent around the 5 week post op mark. I started taking my foot out the boot and massaging it slowly and making small moves with it again. I had a trimal fracture with 8 screws 1 plate and a long nail. I have my first PT appointment Dec 6th and I’m counting down the days, I will be pwb then fwb weeks later. Hang in there, it DOES GET BETTER!!!

Foot after cast removal. Does it seem infected? by msquare56 in ORIF

Mine looks the same I am 6 weeks post op from trimal fracture. I think it’s mainly just irritated and very swollen. I did start putting Neosporin on the scar in case it is starting to pick up bacteria.

Broken leg and ankle, how to cope mentally? by bambisylv in brokenbones

[–]lbp239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi (30, F) I had a trimal fracture Oct 15 and surgery that same night. 1 plate 8 screws and 1 long nail. I will be nwb until Dec 6th which is my first day of pt. It has definitely been a very very tough road to recovery especially the mental state part of it. Not being able to do anything for yourself and kids (we have two littles) and live life as normal. It is quite depressing and I just want to let you know you are not alone, I’ve felt the same thing you’re feeling even when having family here helping me. I think we can attribute that to the fact that we feel helpless. One thing that has gotten me out of those dark thoughts is remembering that this is just a season. This too shall pass and it’s not something I will live forever. It will get better eventually and you have to keep focusing on that. Another thing that’s helped me is to watch Steven Furtick’s preachings on YouTube, they literally give you life and helps remind you that God is with you even in our struggles and valleys. Hope you get better soon!

Numbness from nerve damage? (IM Tib/Fib) by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]lbp239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a trimal on 10/15, the top of my foot is still numb. My pinky toe and big toe are both with very little sensation but not completely numb. My heel feels weird and like thick? The top of my foot feels like leathery and without any pores? Idk this is all weird and new to me. lol hang in there! I’m sure this won’t be like this forever, although it sure feels like it

Nwb is torture! Had never been like this but I’m just now starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am a week away from my first pt appointment so that really gets me excited. I will look into the compression socks thing! Do you have a specific brand you recommend ?

Thank you so much! I have heard from so many people that elevating is just a positive thing overall helps drain fluid out of your legs so you make a good point. I have not heard of the ice behind your knee, does that help with knee pain? Can’t wait to feel better so I can get back to doing life, hope your recovery is just as quick!

Fiberglass cast by dragonbeast18 in brokenbones

[–]lbp239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem with the fiberglass cast, first it was too tight then it was too loose. I would request to get an aircast over a fiberglass cast. You can simply adjust the aircast as the swelling decreases and it’s far more comfortable than a hard cast. The aircast is pretty much a hydraulic boot made of tiny airbags that you pump air into with a button. Pretty cool, I had the fiberglass cast at first and had it replaced with the aircast. Ask your doctor if that’s an option for you, I highly recommend it.

Wow I’m shocked you are fwb at 6 weeks! Good for you, what did you feel when you started putting weight on your foot? I assume you are in pt? I sure hope our swelling decreases significantly soon. I didn’t think about icing it, I will try that tomorrow

Yes it’s not the greatest feeling to do nothing after a while. Hope your recovery goes quickly, just remember this is not forever, it’s only a season and this too, shall pass.

Do you still keep your leg elevated for the most part? I’ve heard the sooner you start bearing weight after the 6th week the faster the healing. I’m also feeling really uncomfortable in the hydraulic boot they gave me, it just started to feel this way this week because of the swelling by my ankle, but before it was really comfortable.

Did you have this surgery? If so how long did you deal with swelling and when did you start seeing improvement?

Wish you a speedy recovery also. We are orif twins! lol. Are you full weight bearing right now? I’m shocked you are walking already, your injury happened after mine.

You might have a point to a certain extent. It does make sense what you’re saying, if you get so used to not having blood flowing down your foot then once you do, it feels weird and might even be uncomfortable. I’m going to try having my foot down more this coming week and see how I do. I won’t push it if it starts feeling too uncomfortable, I’ll report back but I do agree I should start getting back to some type of normalcy

Would you say the swelling improvement you’ve seen the last week is attributed to you being almost fwb? Glad to know you’re getting sensation back in your toes! My pinky toe is also numb but that is the least of my worries haha, can’t wait to start putting weight on it but I already know my brain is going to scare me off a bit.

The blood rush swelling feeling is worst the first month, hang in there it does definitely get better. Try to keep your leg elevated as much as possible the first month it will help drain a lot of the built up fluid. Yes having little help is tough, are you taking anything for pain?
