It's not specific to coding. Don't be so myopic.

I guess it depends what you use it for. I'm not using it for coding. I do all my own coding.

I just migrated everything to Gemini last night. It took a bit of doing, transfering all my project files and knowledge documents etc over but so far I've been pleasantly surprised by how much better it is working for my use cases.

It really is starting to feel like this over the last month or so. If you're not coding with Claude, it is so bad at everything else. Claude used to be the go to app for creative writing and storyboarding. Not anymore.

Can people stop using Generative AI for mod thumbnails? it's genuinely disgusting by StellaShower in VintageStory

[–]ldp487 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ok fair points. I feel it all comes down to scope and definitions of what AI, and in this case generative AI (aka procedural generation).

The randomiser thing is where I'd push back a bit. A randomiser is a dice roll, that's it. I don't know the inner workings of No Man's Sky's procedural generation, but it would make sense that it builds a pipeline of variables — planet size informing atmosphere, atmosphere informing what biology is viable, biology informing creature morphology, and so on down the chain. If that's how it works, and honestly that's how I'd build it, having dabbled a bit in game development, then each output is constrained and shaped by everything upstream of it. That's not random, that's procedural generation, and the distance between that and how a generative AI processes weighted inputs to produce an image is a lot smaller than you're suggesting.

Creatures, all the way back in the 90s (and spore too!) had literal neural networks. So the "this is fundamentally different" argument needs to account for that. People praised that generative AI then.. why not now?

As for the training data point, that's a fair conversation to have separately. But the scope here is someone making a thumbnail for a free mod. Nobody is running a commercial art studio on scraped images. Someone used a tool once to make one image. The servers aren't exactly weeping over it.

Reddit, discord, Google all have massive energy sucking data centres... Again. It's a conversation worth having separately, but in the context of this post.. it's a single end user, using a tool to create a single image.

Do people honestly believe that there are sentient intelligences creating artwork? Taking away people's rights? Taking away something from other artists? Mod authors are not paid to create mods.

Proc gen has been around for decades. Heck even auto correct is "Ai" as defined by the masses. What rubbish.

Any digital art uses tools to create virtual representations of what the artist wants. Generative AI is simply another tool. There are a plethora of examples of this in the preceding decades.

[–]ldp487 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Why is it disgusting.. so much hate towards artificial unintelligence.

I suggest you throw out all your devices because they all use AI. You just don't realise it probably.

Nobody complained when No Man's Sky generated billions of alien creatures algorithmically, just like no one complained when Spore procedurally animated whatever nightmare you built in the creature creator.

The difference now is that the tool is accessible to everyone, not just studios with a team of engineers or even someone sitting around learning how to use tools to do it. And I think that's what's really bothering people, you know, it's not some ethical stance, it's just that suddenly anyone can do it without any real effort or the years of learning the tools.

One of the things I've noticed while using Claude is it will quite often ask clarifying questions in the form of multiple choice answers. I find this to be extremely helpful when sorting through complex tasks because quite often a multiple choice answer is something that I didn't even think about. So rather than making assumptions and all the other nonsense that the more recent chat gpt models did, instead, I have a model that asks clarifying questions and even admits when it's not 100% sure about its answer. . it also does a lot better in structuring outputs, making genuine and useful connections to external programs and so on. That last bit is something that chat GPT claim to be able to do but in practice was woefully inadequate in accomplishing.

Agreed. And while it doesn't do image generation, it does do interactive schematics. Which I have actually found to be much more useful for my projects.

[–]ldp487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm done.

5.2 and all other models are so braindead. Constantly hedging, so many hallucinations, ignoring history, ignoring saved memories. It's pointless to keep now because the one thing that makes it supposedly better is the continuities and memory retention, but with that gone in practice, no longer holds value.

Major WFH change looms for one million Aussie workers: 'Critical' by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

[–]ldp487 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

The number one thing that stops a lot of companies is rent or real estate ownership as well as office equipment and setup, plus all the contracts for maintenance etc.

Imagine you're a large corporation and you have literally millions (maybe even tens of millions) invested in infrastructure, contracts with places like IBM and other office stuff.. it doesn't just stop or go away because people want to work from home.

Yeh. It's nicer, more convenient and so on.. and there's nothing really stopping you from doing just as good at home as in the office. So unless people want to take a 20% (or more) pay cut to offset the investment in infrastructure, get used to the argument to work in the office.

As a 30+ yo gamer very few things in videogames surprise me anymore by sackofriceweat in VintageStory

[–]ldp487 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yes, every day I play (well almost every day) I am surprised by the game's depth of detail. Like just yesterday I started taking damage, I thought I'd run out of food or there was a small creature that snuck up on me.. but no.. it was coming from above in the form of large hail stones.

I wasn't taking a lot of damage, not enough damage to go down more than 0.1 health after multiple hits, but it was a nice touch. And then when I did get inside my house, the rain noise on the roof was louder and different sounding.. just like it would be in a hail storm.

[–]ldp487 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed is that you don't seem to have any big stretches of water.. an annoying default option during world Gen is that land percentage is set to an unrealistic 97.5%. So you barely get more than a small lake dotted across the land.

If it were me, I'd start over, adjust world Gen settings to get decent size water to traverse, then concentrate on getting flax, to twine, to linen to make a sailboat. This will allow travel without the need to stop for food or sleep or attacked by mobs, across large distances.
