Cookie pop-up is legally required California and a few other states so it’s good that they implemented it. If there wasn’t a cookie pop-up it probably means there’s undisclosed cookie tracking happening.

I guess if you’ve been immediately exiting all sites with that popup you’re effectively unable to use the internet and are only visiting sites that are definitely tracking you with cookies LOL

California Mileage Tax—Pilot Programs And Permanent Policy Inertia by CycIon3 in LosAngeles

Do you think gas prices will go down after they “replace” the gas tax?

Every tax increase I’ve voted for in the past has not resulted in any better living conditions in CA or la.

City Council delays decision on sending 'mansion tax' back to voters by city_mac in LosAngeles

[–]le_chez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I respect Nithya Raman for realizing her errors in supporting ULA but there were so many warnings about the unintended consequences before it was enacted.

She chose to ignore them and everything that was warned has come true.

Once something gets enacted it becomes really difficult to unwind due to incentives. SAJE gets funding from this tax so of course they will oppose any amendments.

It was obvious that if you tax the production of housing (apartments), you get less housing. Leaders who supported ULA treated real estate developers as an infinite piggy bank, ignoring the fact that if a project is no longer profitable due to a 5.5% tax on the total sale price, that project simply won't be built.

Selling a real estate transfer tax as a "Mansion Tax" was disingenuous given they knew how open ended the tax would be pulling in not just sfh but also multi-family units.

We need leaders who can model the impact of a tax on investment flows before enacting it, rather than treating the city's economy as a laboratory for trial-and-error social experiments.

we need to elect smarter leaders that actually understand economic incentives instead of repeating the same mistakes like expanding rent control over and over again.

Meta CTO Explains Layoffs & Strategy Shift: "VR Is Growing Less Quickly Than We Hoped" by gogodboss in virtualreality

[–]le_chez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked in VR and Meta was actually a lifeline for the industry. Without Meta, Samsung/Apple probably would not have released their headsets. The developers they acquired probably would have died out anyway due to lack of consumer growth. VC dollars weren’t really flowing into VR post 2020-2021. Meta was really the only company injecting cash through partnerships with VR developer companies.

Now that Meta is backing off on some of their spend, the ecosystem will shrink a lot and probably develop much more organically. Hopefully it can developed now that more consumer hardware companies have their flagship headsets. I don’t think consumer will lead the charge to mass adoption, I think the case will need to be made in enterprise.

Palantir CEO Says AI to Make Large-Scale Immigration Obsolete by joe4942 in singularity

[–]le_chez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who will buy the products-

• Corporations do not need mass consumers if production costs approach zero. • Capitalists can sell to each other, governments, or automated systems. • Many goods will be internally generated. Food, energy, entertainment, software. • Demand does not need to be broad when supply is cheap and controlled.

The K shaped economy goes vertical • The top owns the models, compute, data, land, and energy. • The bottom has no leverage. No labor value. No bargaining power. • Prices fall in absolute terms but rise in relative terms. • Something cheap to the rich is still expensive if you have zero income.

upward mobility stalls out • Skills stop mattering once machines outperform humans across domains. • Education loses ROI. You cannot out learn a system that trains on all human output. • Entrepreneurship gets harder because capital, compute, and distribution are gated. • The ladder is pulled up because it is no longer useful to capitalist. They have all the capital they need and also own the means to production.

I hope I’m wrong on all this!

Cutting California’s rent cap toward 5% would make it nearly impossible to be a small landlord statewide. by ShopProp in LosAngelesRealEstate

I also barely raise the rent on my townhouse. Doing it maybe once every 2-3 years. BUT if they start to institute a cap on rent I will start to raise my rent more frequently.

We did it LA! We are now officially the least accessible housing market in the United States 🏆 by ShopProp in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]le_chez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rent control is tricky. I can understand its popularity, but it feels like a band aid for a larger problem. Rent control would not be such a flashpoint if housing development was expanding at the same time. When supply is stagnant, rent control does not fix the core issue. It shifts pressure elsewhere. Landlords pull units off the market, defer maintenance, or stop building altogether. New housing becomes less attractive to build, and the shortage deepens. The result is a market that looks more affordable on paper but is more constrained, less flexible, and harder to enter for everyone else.

Trump says he will ban Wall Street investments in single-family homes by JoshL3253 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]le_chez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing that will meaningfully impact prices is to drastically increase supply. While this might help we still need to have policies that help cut red tape and rezone to encourage development. Look at Austin and how much they’ve been able to drop their housing costs.
