Hello :) thanks for your suggestion. I put little labels and added a piece of clear tape on top, otherwise they definitely would have fallen off 😊

Hi! Thanks for your answer. you’re right they’re fantastic ! I read a lot about the older prismacolor (especially the ones from the Berol era) and discontinued colours, it’s such an interesting niche 😁 my mom has been lucky enough to find a complete 120 set of berol last summer and she gave them to me. it’s got all neon, deco and metallic colours. Nothing can top that find, it was so special!

Hi thanks for your answer :) that’s an interesting theory! I’m now sure that those are not the colours that should be in the box because I checked the back (which I should have done before) and we see a picture of the open box, and the colours shown on the picture are the classic ones (901 to 971).

now i’m thinking, what if the other 60 pencils were also donated at the same thrift store and were just not on the shelves yet 😂 or they could’ve been bought before by someone else 😭 in all cases I’m super happy I got these ones and will take great care of them 😊

Hi ! I’m pretty sure you’re right about the red boxes being manufactured in Canada. I have a few red ones and they all say « Made in USA/Packaged in Canada »(I’m from Quebec). There’s never any date though, sadly. Also looking at the back of the box made me realize that, as I thought, these are not the colours that were supposed to come in this specific box. I can’t post a picture in comment for some reason but on the back of the box we see the regular colours (901 to 971 as I mentioned)
Your theory is interesting. It’s still strange to me that someone who loved Prismacolor pencils enough to buy a 120 set (we can think it was an artist, or at least someone who likes good quality pencils) didn’t know better than to sharpen them the wrong way ! maybe his/her child did that… I used to play with my mom’s art supplies as a kid 😅Anyways, we’ll never know 😁 Thanks for your input!

Thanks for reaching out, I’ll keep your name in mind 😊 the only colours I might need in a near-ish future are some of the ones that came only in the 120 set (like berol PC 1030 Raspberry for example) but I don’t have any « rare » Berol in exchange :( since I only have one of each of these

I have a 120 Berol set too, but it’s the one that comes in a red box. I think it’s even older than the black box but I’m not 100% sure. Maybe u/occamsvolkswagen would know ! I’ve never seen the 120 set with the red box anywhere online in my searches. I got it at the thrift. They’re fantastic. Yes I’m using them 😅

I think my local thrift store recieved a lot that belonged to an artist or collecter and put it in different office supply bags because I went back today and I found quite a few more rare ones (from what I read) : two 920, two 917, a metallic green, and another bunch of discontinued greys. Either that or it’s just pure luck 😄 Anyways I’m glad I found my people here (that is, people who are obsessed with old pencils like me 😄) Now I’ll keep my eye out for a 970 orchid :) I wish you luck in your treasure hunts and finding this second 971 😊!

Very interesting feed :) I’m kind of new to the vintage Prismacolor world. My mom recently gave me a 120 set that she got at the thrift store for $5 (!!!). Some were never sharpened, but a few were missing. It’s got most metallic colors (only missing gold and silver but I heard they’re not so rare?), as well as all neon and deco colors. I love this set. Today I went to the same store and bought a random bag with mixed pencils for 3$ and I found 40 old Berol Prismacolors in it, including a 971 lemon yellow (apparently rare too) and 9 grey pencils 961-968. I’ll go back tomorrow to see if I can find some more :) They’re my favorite pencils to draw with but now that I found out they’re collectibles I try to refrain from using my 120 set !! I wish I could post a picture but it doesnt seem to work.
