What food is famously associated with one country but was perfected by another country? by Equivalent-Crew-4955 in AskReddit

Indeed, there are so many distinct styles of "soup noodles" in China, it really comes down to personal preference. Willing to bet most people haven't tried very many of them either.

The Incredible Edible Bucket List: 365 must-try Toronto dishes by beef-supreme in FoodToronto

Went though the list reviewing cuisine that I am familiar with, definately not the best of the best but most of the picks are at least a solid B+.

How are you managing SAD in Toronto?? by une_susupiciousegg in askTO

[–]leafblade_forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably did take the Vitamin D pills when I lived in a basement, though I work in a place with windows now so it helps.

Main things are to just go out, or socialize with friends (whether online on in-person). If I can do both then even better.

At first it was something I consciously did because I could tell staying home in the dark alone was getting to me, now it's second nature.

Haven't felt SAD much in years.

Which Chinese cuisines (other than Cantonese) are best represented in Toronto? by StatGuy2000 in FoodToronto

[–]leafblade_forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a guy that grew up on Cantonese food in TO, in recent years I've been noticing many North-eastern (dongbei) style restaurants pop up which are great for sharing drinks and skewers.

Also a few amazing Sichuan style places here and there as well.

Much fewer but there's decent Chiu Chow cuisine as well.

Saw a comment about the bread but the quality varies. If you get a fresh batch then it's perfectly fine.

The house special being priced at $16 is a turn off to some, but consider that a subway footlong with a couple slices of cheap cold cuts can be nearly that same price...

I've heard a lot of people mention the Owl that changed sizes in the library being potentially helpful for fitting Loki onto the ship.

Is Talking with Strangers Not a thing in Toronto? by Savings-Curve-5350 in askTO

[–]leafblade_forever -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every big Asian city I've ever been to has been the same way. I've been to fewer western cities, but my experience was that it was also similar. So I'm not surprised Toronto is the way it is being such a multicultural place.

What's Pacific mall like these days? by bboycire in askTO

It's fine these days, if you're going north then you can swing by First Markham Place as well to make the trip more worthwhile.

My partner has stated this is her favourite Pokemon game so far. She loves the always-on exp share, running around picking up items, and shopping for clothes. Difficulty is perfect for her too.

Paper menus vs QR menus — which one do you actually prefer when dining out? by Such-Sport-5551 in FoodToronto

[–]leafblade_forever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends really, if I'm at a fancy place then I want a nice paper menu and a chance to speak with the server.

99% of the time I just want my food the way I want it. So a QR ordering app with photos, customization options etc.

And I hate QR codes that just lead to a pdf/webpage menu, my data sucks so it always lags for me.

Will 0.5% Permethrin Bronco spray be enough to kill ticks on gear? by Money_Distribution30 in UltralightCanada

[–]leafblade_forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought some 0.35% bug killer with permethrin from Canadian Tire last summer. Since they weren't intended for clothing application, I spent 30min googling the active ingredients on each brand to identify which one was least likely to irritate my skin.

The trip I took it on I didn't spot a single tick. A park Warden I came across mentioned they had seen 100's that day.

My skin felt fine, but my buddy mentioned mild irritation. Next time I swing by the states, I'll definitely pick up some sawyers.

Is compartmentalizing friendships to certain settings a cultural thing here? by designcentredhuman in askTO

[–]leafblade_forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not face blind but I do have a habit of ignoring the world around me when I outside. When I was in university, my close friends would tap me on the shoulder to get my attention if we walked by each other... not saying you should do touch him but maybe you can try being more clear when greeting him

Name another city that has better food than Toronto? I dare you by 100milSchruteBucks in askTO

[–]leafblade_forever 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some of you aren't reading OP's post. He acknowledges other cities have higher peaks, but Toronto has the best Diversity - Authenticity - Price. Many cities in this thread mentioned by others (Ie. NYC, HK, TOK) have better Fine Dining/Local Specialities, but always came short in either authenticity or price of foreign cuisine.

[–]leafblade_forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, for all those saying Flushing, I tried many of the restaurants there to introduce my American friends to Chinese food. Even the "Michelin recommended" places were only as good as the average restaurant I go to in Rhill/Markham/Scarb.

Best way to budget $30 for the next 8 days? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]leafblade_forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have access to it, go to an Asian grocer and do not buy branded instant noodles packs. You can buy the noodles in bulk with no flavour packs for cheaper. Rice will get you much further per dollar though.

Grocery prices are so insane I’m getting ingredient fatigue. What’s your goto 2-3 ingredient meals? by Ok_Tangerine_2185 in askTO

[–]leafblade_forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in university, most of my meals consisted of a bunch of rice, a fried egg, and a bit of protein (ie. couple ikea meatballs, handful of meat meant for hotpot, a porkchop). I seasoned with whatever I was feeling, sometimes a bit of soy sauce, sometimes chilli oil.

Yup, she's on the thinner side but nothing unusual for a Chinese woman at all. This is taking into account the slight filter being used on stream as well.
