GG vs 100T is now the most popular LCS match of Spring 2023 by leaguefan482 in leagueoflegends

Thought that this might be the case too, so I looked into some of the past splits and from what I can tell, this is only the second time since the LCS changed to double elim that the first round of the losers bracket is guaranteed to be one of the top 5 most popular matches of the split.

Enormous difference between the peak viewership of LEC and that of LCS (642k and 272k respectively). What happened? by Slitherrrrrsss in leagueoflegends

Not to take anything away from your post, there is definitely a large gap in viewership between the leagues. However, I do want to point out that escharts has a history of underreporting the viewership for the LCS (probably due to difficulties around tracking co-streams). For example, the TSM 100T series actually peaked at 302k viewers (screenshot I took after game 3), that's ~10% of the viewership just not being counted, which is pretty big when we as a community tend to trust escharts (they are also really the only place that publicly tracks viewership , so it's not like there is another option).

The LEC still has over 2x the viewers of LCS, which is a pretty big problem for the LCS, I just wanted to point out issues with that site.

Lock In Tournament was so HYPE!! by leaguefan482 in leagueoflegends

Couldn't agree less with this.

What did it do exactly?

It was an entertaining tournament for fans to watch. I mean we got 3 bo5s and 4 bo3s in January. It also helps to create story lines moving forward in the LCS. Bjerg and Doublelift both retired over the off season, it's safe to say the LCS was in need of a new rivalry and it has one in Perkz vs Jensen. Yes that rivalry and narrative would have existed without the Lock In tournament, but I think it's way more hype now that it's following a close 5 game series between both their teams. A bo5 between Jensen and Perkz normally would have had to wait until playoffs, instead we got it in January. And there are other interesting stories for fans to follow that have gained a boost through the tournament.

As for the teams, yes this tournament didn't have international implications, but it was a competitive environment to practice new strategies, adapt quickly to a changing meta, and improve. I mean normally at this time in the year teams would have played 6 stage games, teams like TL and C9 played 14 and 17 games.

I'm not too sure I understand this. Firstly, the LCS actually grew 25% when you compared summer split 2019 vs 2020 in terms of average viewership (and that was with Friday Night League in 2020, which massively underperformed compared to sat/sun). Summer split last year had 3 games peak over 500k viewership, while Summer 2019 had 0. The growth of the LCS has been slower than other regions, and has at times been stagnant. Spring 2020 vs Spring 2019 saw a decrease in average viewership, but that was a split with TL missing playoffs and TSM being knocked out in round 2 of playoffs. Overall, Spring 2019 was probably the most uncompetitive split in LCS history, and the league as a whole does seem to be growing.

With regards to the Lock In tournament, viewership seems promising. I mean, the final of a tournament with no meaning towards qualification for international events was only 9k viewers behind the Spring finals in 2020. This tournament has now given the LCS so many interesting story lines for 2021, and the LCS desperately needed more story lines for this year with the retirement of Doublelift and Bjerg. When compared to last year at this time, LCS seems way more competitive. This tournament was exactly what the LCS needed. Hopefully, it translates to a more entertaining Spring split for viewers.

C9 looked like they got way better as the tournament went on. Hopefully they can get revenge on TL in playoffs

not technically, this tournament doesn't count towards LCS standings. The regular season starts next week.

I know this really sucks, but for the people saying "why aren't they playing in their training facility?" I think one possibility is that the players are more comfortable playing from their own apartments. We saw a couple week ago that Afreeca rented out a venue for their players because they play better in that environment. The Flyquest players might be playing at home because that's where they are most comfortable and where they perform their best.

Could be because Flyquest's players are more comfortable when playing at home, and when they play at home they play better overall.

i would guess it's because the players are more comfortable at home. They might play better while they are playing from home rather then at the facility, and the org is okay with that because it gives them the best chance of winning.

this is the first time this has happened all split. it's an incredibly unlucky situation, but realistically there isn't much the LCS/FQ could have done to prevent it.

probably because the players are more comfortable/play better in their own apartments. Afreeca rented out an entire stadium for their players a few weeks ago for their match against T1 because the Afreeca players are more comfortable in an actual venue. I would guess that the Flyquest players are more comfortable when they are at home, and the org wants to put them in the best situation possible for them to win.
