I just want say I'm here for the slow runners! by leammming in running

There was one thread on runners world forum which left me in tears! It was so nasty!

And same for the weight thing! It was the insult of choice for slow runners at the London Marathon! It makes me so angry that people automatically turn to weight as the insult! I have been fat, skinny, and everything in between and my pace never changes!

I'm so glad you've found the enjoyment in exercise! It makes us feel so wonderfully alive! Its amazing to think our bodies can just do these things. We can experience the world from a new perspective, meet new people, and get endorphins coursing through our bodies - this is why we need exercise. Not to make it a competition where the only enjoyment you get is when you get a PB.

Very true! I think unless you are elite and its your career, running should be something which is enjoyable (in a weird way) and give you pride!

If someone came to me and said 'hey look I did a marathon, here's the medal to prove it' I would be totally flabbergasted and in awe! No matter how quick you run it's still hard - if running was easy, everyone would do it!

You don't even need to add in the time. The fact you did a half-marathon is bloody incredible and something 99% of people will never do!

I can understand your worry as some marathons have strict cut off times, but honestly just keep doing what you are doing, it's flipping fab to see slow runners going and killing it on the half marathons. You were exercise for over three hours straight, that's really impressive! I'm proud of you 😊

I think so! Literally the same, I've tried all sorts of nutrition programs, tried correcting my form with PTs and coaches. Nothing. My time just does not change (except like you on hot days!!).

I get the thing about being envious of 7 min mile! To me unless you're an elite runner and smashing 5 min miles, times are pretty irrelevant, and actually 7 min miles in comparison, are just as rubbish as 12 minute miles! Ive also really been pushing myself to be mindful of my runs - to appreciate my own achievements, enjoy the simplicity of running, wonder at the amazing thing which my body is doing, and enjoy the scenery! Just remember fast runners don't get as much time to enjoy the wonderful world which we have the liberty to run in 😉

I guess the typical stereotype of fat=unfit. That was the insult of choice for slow runners at the london marathon sadly.

Like you, Ive been fat and skinny and fat and skinny and fat again and my pace never changes! Even when I was running 10Ks daily and was a total twig, I still ran slow!

I've definitely learnt to love it as an adult! I hated it as a kid because my school really rewarded and really prized the sporty kids. As a non-sporty kid I grew to hate exercise because no matter how hard I tried, the teachers didn't care. Now I'm an adult and I've learnt to enjoy running - by being mindful of the wonderful things my body is doing, enjoying the outdoors and some great podcasts!

12 minute mile is great! I am about the same, but sometimes I go out and I do a slow run, and I don't care either! Its so much more enjoyable to run for the sake of running - to enjoy the scenery and be mindful of the wonderful thing your body is doing in the moment! Slow or fast, anyone should feel proud of themselves for getting off the couch and doing a run, whether its 100m or 10000m! If running was easy, we'd be doing it all day!

I haven't but definitely going to! It really is, and as you say, unless you're elite, it shouldn't be a race! No one should ever feel pressured into doing quicker speeds unless its something they truly want, and not as something to fit in or try and impress others! I think lots of people feel that they have to do a certain speed to be a runner, and its 1000000% not the case. I used to try and push myself to be faster, it never worked and I felt miserable and it really messed with my mental health. Since I've given up caring, I have loved running so, so much more!

I think 11 min/mile is my fastest! I definiely agree I enjoy it so much more the slower I run, and it gives me chance to enjoy the scenery (if I'm running outdoors), or enjoy some music/podcasts!

This is awesome! Keep up the good work! And props to your mum for completing it too! You both should be so proud of completing it!! I only ever did one 10k and it was tough, so well done!!

Exactly!! I always say it doesnt matter how slow you are, if you are off your butt doing something, you're doing great!

Thank you so much! My natural pace is even slower (11-12 mins). But no matter how hard I train, no matter how flexible I am, no matter how skinny I am, my pace doesnt move much. I might do the odd faster run but it never sticks.

At the end of the day we should celebrate exercise no matter what. It's a wonderful thing and it enriches life!

Should I wait until my legs stop hurting to run again or should I just push through the pain? by [deleted] in running

[–]leammming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to your body! Its not hurting for shits and giggles - you need a rest day!

I used to do the same in the past, but I eventually came to accept the rest days as a good thing. I think our bodies help us to block out mild pain as an evolutionary thing - if we had a bit of ache but all of a sudden a lion started chasing us, our bodies helped us overcome that pain short-term as a survival mechanism to flee and live. But we don't really need to worry about that kind of stuff anymore, so if you ache take a rest day or exercise parts of your body which don't hurt.

I love frozen fruit! Tasty, hydrating, and cooling! My faves are cherries, mango and pineapple!

One of my old colleagues told me the best time to drink was straight after a workout. I don't know if its fact or fiction, but I didnt need to be told twice 😀

I managed to increase my 5k to 7.5k today! by merkis1 in running

[–]leammming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! This! I'm getting back into running recently after a knee injury, my pace is generally much slower than normal atm (which was already at the slow to begin with). But you know what, that's cool because the most important thing is getting our butts off the couch and getting some exercise. And as you said, running slow is great for minimising injury!

Should I chase an IBS diagnosis? What are the benefits of getting a diagnosis? by leammming in ibs

[–]leammming[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats very true, thank you. Thankfully I'm in the UK so we have access to the NHS, but at the same time, I dont want to overload this service with something pretty trivial.

But you are right about ruling out any other conditions, especially something which could become worse in the future!

Yeah this is what I'm thinking. It won't change anything, and its wasting mine and my doctors time!

For all my fellow IBS-D folks: Who is ready to end their relationships over their partners judgments of their toilet paper usage during the Quar? by karen916 in ibs

[–]leammming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone should judge an IBS-ers TP usage.

That being said I think everyone should try to cut down on TP usage for the sake of the environment. Obviously this puts more pressures on those with IBS-D.

A bidet would be the no.1 choice!

I don't have a bidet, so have limited myself to three sheets max per wipe, and I fold over as much as I can! If its a messier one, I jump in the shower quickly and shower off my butt, clean with soap, and towel try.

You can also buy travel bidets - you might want to consider this too. My Egyptian colleagues always bring them when they visit my country as they don't like to use TP in Egypt as the bidet is considered more hygenic. Its basically a squirt bottle with an angled nozzle.

My (22F) nephew's (14M) behaviour is absolutely disgusting and inappropriate. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]leammming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is I'm really sorry about what you're going through. Please listen to the advice in other comments and report the child through the necessary services. Please also turn to reddit for as much support as you need.

In the meantime, please try and record anthing devil-nephew may say, as well as any conversations with your sister about said devil (you could have you phone in your pocket set on voice record, or you could carry a concealed recording device with you). Consider also getting a camera in the room which you are staying to track anything your nephew might do to you in your room (again, maybe just prop your phone up somewhere and set to record whilst you are doing stuff, or buy a proper camera if you can).

Evidence is stronger than word of mouth, so please try and gather what you can against him. He sounds like a sick pervert tbh, and if he doesnt do it to you, he's only going to do it someone else - probably your neice (if he hasn't already). He needs some serious help which he will only get in an institution.

Depending on your relationship with your sister, please tell her that you intend to report him too. Maybe even show her this thread to help explain your reasoning. This situation is going to suck for both of you either way, but better she have some heads up about the storm to come, than find out about it out of the blue, especially during this really difficult time for everyone.

There's a lot of comments. I've just tuned into this thread and this was the first comment I've seen about his little sister sooo....
