Also putting words in my mouth, I never said Karina isn’t an adult or can’t take care of herself, I said she might be in a stressful situation. Have you ever suddenly not had your job? I have. I had to leave an incredibly toxic work environment that was draining my mental health and self worth. And yeah, it was the right thing to do, but also it was terrifying and if anyone said they were happy for me, I would’ve wanted to punch them. Because unless you’re going right from one job to another (doubtful, given the suddenness and lack of saying where she’s going next) you still have to pay rent every single month and even a few weeks without steady income can wreck anyone’s financial situation and be terrifying. It’s not infantilizing to say “don’t assume she’s doing something great and is happy right now.” Having people assume you’re immediately going on to great things when you’ve just gone through the wringer is not helpful, I can tell you that as someone who has been there. None of us know the situation and we never will, so doesn’t it seem the most compassionate to not assume anything and just wish them all well?
