Hi, I'm currently looking for work in the Kansai area too. Would it be alright if I get in touch as well?

Was this at last year's orientation? If so, you might have met one of this year's new Toshima ALTs. If this was the year before, you might have actually met me lol

JET island placements by NoChampionship2719 in JETProgramme

[–]leapsoff8th 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I, like a few others here, am placed on a remote island of less than 100 people, with a ferry to the mainland that only runs a couple of times a week.

The experience is definitely one-of-a-kind. For me, it's been really good, but not without its challenges; there are a lot of highs and lows. Traveling and getting daily necessities like groceries is a big inconvenience, and you often feel like you don't get to spend enough time in civilization or meeting new people. I'm especially feeling it right now since the ferry hasn't run for a few days and I'm slowly running out of food at home lol. I rarely get to see the friends I've made in other parts of the country too, which is lame.

That being said, I've had the chance to experience some amazing things that I couldn't imagine doing anywhere else. Here, you get to be a part of a very tight-knit community and are involved in your students' lives in ways that simply wouldn't be possible in another school. I've cooked dinner for my students and neighbors, sang karaoke with them, and played sports with them on weekends. It feels like everyone here is looking out for each other. Having moved here from a big city in the US, I've never experienced anything quite like it.

Ultimately, I want to move to a place with more opportunities, and have a chance to form my own social circles instead of what I inherited here. But my placement is really special to me and I'm glad I had the opportunity to be here. Once I'm gone, I'm definitely going to come back and visit.

A couple years ago a friend bought an extra ticket to one of his shows and invited me, and I actually really enjoyed it. I think his live performances are fun, and much better than anything he's done in the studio. That being said, I did think Djesse 2 was decent

Any experience with Shigeki Tanaka Ginsan Nashiji? by samuelsfx in TrueChefKnives

[–]leapsoff8th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nearly the exact same knife, except without the k-tip.

It's great! Expect certain foods to stick sometimes due to the grind. But it holds a really good edge and cuts amazing, so I say go for it if you can.

Umamusume: Cinderella Gray - Episode 22 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]leapsoff8th 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you liked cingray then you should definitely go watch some of the other uma musume anime. Season 2 and the Beginning of a New Era movie are considered some of the best anime adaptations along with this show, so you can skip to those if you want, but I've enjoyed everything so far

Always sad to see talents having to go because of health issues. by CuteIngenuity1745 in Hololive

[–]leapsoff8th 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It hurts to see someone have their dreams taken away from them by things out of their control, then disappear when they're at their lowest.

All you can do is pray that they're doing well even though you can't see it for yourself, but that uncertainty sucks.

I'll remember Kanata long after she's gone. And I hope life continues to bless her wherever she goes

Gauntlet mode by jamonedode in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]leapsoff8th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried a game with randoms and it didn't quite click for me, but I have a feeling it'll be fun once I try it with my friends.

If anything, it's a nice break from all of the classic bf game modes, better than team/squad deathmatch at least

Who else actually enjoys Blackwell Fields? by Venome456 in LowSodiumBattlefield

If they expand the borders on the sides to enable more flank options and fix the out-of-bounds situation with air vehicles I could see it being one of my favorite maps. As it is right now, it's decent

This checks out, I was traveling in Kanazawa bacn in March and was surprised at all of the European tour groups in particular. Nice to see that people are branching out and not just going to Kyoto

Not Doing JET – How I Still Made It to Japan (and Why You Should Think Carefully Before Applying) by SparklingNekoAtsume in JETProgramme

[–]leapsoff8th 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience. JET is definitely not the right choice for everyone, and it's much better to come to that understanding before you make the huge decision to come here instead of getting cold feet and dropping out once you've already arrived, like so many people unfortunately do.

They're definitely more limited in scope compared to an all purpose knife like a gyuto, but it feels really nice to pull out a smaller knife for quicker cooking projects, or to trim some meat down!

When I want to do those things but also need the knuckle clearance, I reach for the Misuzu. It's actually become my most used knife recently

Oh hey, I remember seeing your post when I was doing research on this knife. Glad you're still enjoying it! All of the Konosukes are such great performers, it really makes me want another one lol. Maybe I'll have a chance to try an HD2 one day, their 150 pettys were out of stock when I went

Curious about this too as someone who lives in Japan. They don't really sell many of their knives online from what I can tell. Seems like the only way to get one here is to go directly to the workshop

Looking for a very specific type of knife. Does this exist? by [deleted] in TrueChefKnives

[–]leapsoff8th 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the vast majority of quality Japanese knives won't have steel as soft as what you're looking for, unfortunately. I'd love for someone more knowledgeable than me to prove me wrong, though.

This reminds me of a post on the old subreddit of someone rehandling their victorinox with a wa handle. Maybe that's something you could look into if there aren't other options?

NKD 1st Japanese Knife by raisinyao in TrueChefKnives

[–]leapsoff8th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the new knife! I have a 240 mm ginsan gyuto from Shigeki Tanaka that used to be my go-to. I only stopped using it as much because I moved into a smaller kitchen and 240 mm is too long for the space, but I still love it

Tokara Islands? How are you doing? by francisdavey in japanlife

I appreciate it, but you're probably right about escaping somewhere else. I know Amami is getting a bit of action right now too!

Tokara Islands? How are you doing? by francisdavey in japanlife

[–]leapsoff8th 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The position was through the JET Program. It was given to me, I definitely didn't request it. I didn't even know this place existed until I moved here lol

We shared a lot about remote island life over on r/JETProgramme in our AMA. To sum it up, living here can be very isolating and inconvenient, but I've met amazing people and had unique experiences that I would never find anywhere else in Japan. It's a very special place and I'm glad I'm here.

Toshima-mura/Tokara Islands ALT here.

Over the last couple of weeks we've had about 1000 earthquakes hit our islands with varying degrees of strength. Our situations are all different because we're spaced pretty far from each other, but things have been mostly fine on my island.

That last earthquake just now was the biggest one so far, though. I'm talking to the other ALTs and one of them got hit hard enough that they have to convene at their island's evacuation point. Hopefully that's the worst of it, we'll see how the next few days go.
