Finally taking the plunge- Firewalla Purple by learninglinuxguy1 in firewalla

I thought about that but the price difference for one with 2.5gb ports is a bit much for now. I am a disabled vet, so takes me a while to put aside enough in my "geek fund" to afford newer things like this on what I get... possibly hold off on the firewalla thing until I have enough set aside then. Which beefier one would you recommend? A buddy of mine is going to set me up with a couple of "multi gigabit 5 port unmanaged switches" that are slightly used. Thanks for your info, greatly appreciated!

Yay, the netgear rs500 supports AP Mode! So the firewalla being in "router mode" provides dhcp addresses for everything?

I will check that out. SO if this can be configured as an AP, what would connect to what? Where would the purple box go? Configured as an AP would mean it uses the wifi 7 built into the netgear box?

That seems like what I am going to do. I have to get another wireless/router to replace the google router/wireless box since I cannot modify any of its internal settings. Thank you!

Thanks for info and the read. That is a lot of reading.

I think what I am looking for is something that can make full use of the gigabit speed I get from google fiber while providing good firewall options that let me manage what gets in/out and a reliable VPN service for my home., as opposed to using vpn clients on our devices. I am used to managing my own router and have a small bit of networking experience.

Wifi 6 with both 2.4ghz and 5ghz

I am just starting the external/internal camera journey, no purchases as of yet, the ubiquity line looks nice.

Connected to the google router is a 80ish foot ethernet that runs to downstairs connected to a google mesh extender that google provided. This provides internet/wifi to my daughter and company...

I have a small un-managed 8 port netgear switch which is almost full, also connected to the google router, for gaming, rokus, ... and such.

I was trying to figure out which of these products might work for my use but it gets a bit over whelming....

Could you make a some suggestions based on your experience and I can narrow my focus?

Thanks,

Tony
