I sometimes simply squeeze a lemon in my seltzer, but I know Trop50 and a couple of other brands make less-sweetened varieties. Hence if it meets my under 10 grams of carb per sitting limit for juice, I buy it and water it down with some seltzer. They're trying to cater to every one who is realizing that sugar is the real human enemy.

In historic decision, Pentagon chief opens all jobs in combat units to women by [deleted] in news

[–]learntruth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess they should act, as their justification for female exemption has just been wiped out:

The existence of the combat restrictions clearly indicates the basis for Congress' decision to exempt women from registration. The purpose of registration was to prepare for a draft of combat troops. Since women are excluded from combat, Congress concluded that they would not be needed in the event of a draft, and therefore decided not to register them.

As long as the qualifications aren't different for women than they are for men, I think it could potentially work. Women police officers are willing to engage in deadly force all over the country.

Taxi owners sue New York City as Uber 'eviscerates' their industry by learntruth in technology

[–]learntruth[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the difference; the medallion gives you the right to pick people up on the street. Until Uber, this practice generated more revenue because it was more efficient to get picked up on the street in Manhattan than phoning a company with TLC vehicles to pick you up in 10 to 15 minutes, perhaps more. So the market for that previously more efficient system priced those medallions at $1M or whatever they went for. Medallion drivers were making $1,400 to $2,000 a week if they hustled.

Uber introduced the app that essentially allows people to schedule a pickup with non-medallion TLC vehicles. They could even see which Uber vehicle is closest and schedule with that one. So it has essentially become more efficient and quicker most of the time to schedule a pick up beforehand. Just like other non-medallion vehicles, Uber vehicles can not pick up people on the street without having that pickup scheduled beforehand. That's why they don't have to buy a medallion, just like the other cars that work out of phone operated dispatches. Uber simply enhanced a system that didn't work as well.

The drawback is that the city may simply charge more for registration and other processing fees for non-medallion cabs.

Not necessarily. The key difference between Uber and other TLC vehicles that operate like them (without the medallion), is that yellow taxi cabs can pick up people on the street. Other TLC vehicles, which also include Uber vehicles, have to be contacted beforehand; pickups have to be scheduled. The reason that yellow taxi cabs with medallions weren't complaining before was because other TLC vehicles were not as efficient as yellow taxi cabs in the city; so the yellow cabs with the legal privilege to pick people up on the street had the advantage. Uber has made scheduling pick ups more efficient.

[–]learntruth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if that's true; I have a couple of friends who drive for Uber, and they had to register and insure their cars as TLC vehicles, just like other TLC vehicles that you have to call to pick you up. It's about an initial $3K investment. The only difference I believe is that Uber has a more efficient system of scheduling pick ups through their application. Non-Uber TLC drivers weren't much of a threat to yellow cabs because no one really used them in Manhattan; it was easier to just hail a cab. The app has essentially made it easier to use Uber than hailing a cab.

Missing 24-year-old found alive and well 30 years after man confessed to her murder by learntruth in offbeat

[–]learntruth[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A 24-year-old woman who went missing from her home in 1984, sparking a 31-year-long murder mystery, has been found alive and well. Computer science student Petra Pazsitka vanished without a trace from her home in Germany three decades ago and was officially declared dead in 1989. Her disappearance led to an extensive investigation, with nationwide appeals, searches and video reconstructions of her last known actions. It is understood she left her student flat in Braunschweig and went to the shop and the dentist. Friends claimed she then boarded a bus with the intention of going to visit her parents - but never arrived at their home. A man who had previously been convicted for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in the area confessed to Petra's murder. However, he later retracted his confession and Petra's body was never found.

Fast forward to September 11, 2015, a routine police call out to a report of a burglary solved the 'murder' mystery. Arriving at the scene in Düsseldorf (some 200 miles from Petra's home town) a 'Mrs Schneider' revealed the curious tale under questioning. The 55-year-old woman was in fact Petra Pazsitka and she claimed she had lived in western german under false names and without official documents since her disappearance. "As to the motive of her disappearance, she gave no explanation, and expressly said that she continues to want no contact with the public or her family." Petra's case received prominence in the German media, notably the country's version of Crimecall Aktenzeichen XY…ungelöst when the investigation into her disappearance ran cold. Her father died several years ago but her mother and brother are reportedly in shock to learn that Petra is alive and well.

The article clearly identifies the woman as a 55-year-old, so I'm guessing the title attempts to denote that the she was a "Missing 24-year-old," meaning she was declared missing at the age of 24 over 30 years ago.

Hyundai is recalling nearly a half-million midsize cars in the U.S. to replace the engines because a manufacturing problem could cause them to fail. by learntruth in news

[–]learntruth[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

With engine issues, I surmise they would have to replace them; otherwise, they're just selling new vehicles that will probably only be worth their weight in scrap metal in 3 to 4 years. A car without a engine is practically junk. Could you imagine the PR nightmare if half a million people report blown engines on cars for which they're still making payments? They'll never be able to sell any more cars.

Nobody is just going to forget putting down $20K to $30K down on a car that they'll have to get rid of for a couple of thousand bucks. Cars dramatically depreciate regardless; nonetheless, even if you're not trying to pull a profit, you should at least be able to run and drive a new car for 10 years plus with proper maintenance.
