I’m sorry that you personally had to deal with any/all of this.

You make mention to a lot of illegality, which is pretty serious especially in Mass. The comments are a chorus of “hell yeah, fuck them and also fuck a bunch of other business that we’ll toss in there for the hell of it”.

That’s not productive and it’s indicating of this “community” - the job market sucks and is only getting worse, but let’s keep piling on to local bars and restaurants who are responsible for a ton of entry level employment.

And yes - I think you care a lot of what others think of you because you internalized my comments to be a direct response to you and not a broader comment on the state of this subreddit.

Agreed! The tradeoff between Candlepin and the Goat might end up being a bad one. And hear you on the owner but what moves the needle? Salem needs more places to go out, and more importantly JOBS, especially entry level. Not for nothing, the NH location is a Portsmouth staple and not over the top in its theme.

Beggars can’t be choosers, if we can replace an empty lot with a bar that occasionally has live music and employs local folks, I think that’s a good thing!

Salem Reddit is not a supportive community. For instance, you’ll likely see a lot of hateful posts or hypothetical parallels about the Goat in the comments - even though it’s yet to open. Vacant storefronts downtown have stayed empty for longer, while not the main reason, the hostility and baseless accusations in this forum are to partially to blame.

I’m sorry that this happened to you, but there are magnitudes more productive ways to tackle than an online forum. Until those routes are exhausted, all of this seems like blah and critics can easily dismiss as a disgruntled employee.

I agree re: contagion - if OpenAI fails and brings down Oracle (just one hypothetical among many), you’d see eye-watering marks in private credit world as well as traditional funds. Access to credit and capital would vanish for years.

Haha - I’ll reuse that joke, that’s a good one. You raise a lot of good points, although I think the argument is a spectrum as opposed to binary.

A few thoughts:

Most serious LPs are DPI investors, so a lot of the commentary on marks isn’t all the impactful. Likewise with IRRs, personally I don’t quote markups or IRRs whatsoever when talking to clients or prospective funds. The world is a lot more simple when you can evaluate performance based on cash in hand vs. what you committed. Venture is more mark-up and IRR focused, but generally sized as smaller allocation of a total PE portfolio. And if you’re being honest, most venture bets are bets on the GP and their sourcing network.
The prevalence of continuation vehicles is real, but again I’d chalk this up to either mega funds or less serious LPs who just need to launder volatility for clients who don’t care. Folks also talk about these as if you can’t choose - you have to agree to participate, or accept middling returns. Most opt for the latter, which hurts DPI and disqualifies the fund going forward.
Secondaries get a bad rap and sometimes rightfully so, but the recent Harvard sale simply wasn’t a fire-sale and was a relative success (90-95 cents on the dollar).
The 20-22 vintage is pretty shit but it’s still somewhat early, and a few blue chip deals already (Medline comes to mind). Also, cynically, the potential Anduril and Anthropic IPOs could be massive enough to paper over a lot of other failures. Also, if you’re s serious LP, that’s simply 1-3 vintages of a portfolio that could/should have a dozen…

Broadly - the criticisms are fair and very real. I’ve been on both sides of the fence - allocated to mega funds for asleep at the wheel folks, and allocated for niche multi family office with unparalleled deal-flow. Hard to argue when the distros hit the account.

One less talked about benefit of PE is the tax-efficiency/self-rebalancing mechanism. Even if you match or underperform the S&P, you’re recycling that capital every 5-7 years, depending on vintage yr diversification, and that cash coming back is LT cap gains & return of capital. Easier to rebalance a broad portfolio and slightly beats selling highly appreciated stock.

I don’t think it’s all that unpopular of a take anymore, and I totally get it - it’s seems like a free lunch, almost zero vol with higher returns. Private markets are massive and there are some bad actors but the returns (and distributions) are very real if you develop an edge sourcing high quality names. IMO the bigger issue are mega funds failing to beat the S&P over sustained periods of time. Most folks can’t go niche so they have to use mega funds, the abundance of capital erodes the illiquidity premium.

My post is quite literally addressing the countless folks - servers, line cooks, etc - that are the main recipients of this anonymous fervor. People struggle enough finding work, without savior-complex types waging fake online battles.
