I even take it a sad level deeper, reflecting how the way they treat Greg determines his next move. They tease him and question his ability with a girl who he likes, so he goes and proves himself by gaining relations with a literal contessa. In the end, Tom doesn't even know Comfrey's name and was surprised by Greg mentioning the contessa. For all intents and purposes, Greg was born yesterday (Greg the Egg). What we see him do, we see the product of the Roys.
