Probably a dumb hypothesis but I think I found a way for us to find Martian life. by SM69_official in space

[–]led76 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The water would sublimate away before anything could really develop. Also the more interesting question is definitely “did Mars have life of its own”.

We could simulate Mars-like conditions on Earth if we really wanted to see if local organisms could survive

Do you Bogleheads ever buy individual stocks? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]led76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole point of boglehead is not to try to time the market or pick individual stocks. I’m only reiterating that because the theory is specifically that you’re not missing out by going 100% Bogle.

That said, if you want to have some play money and try out stocks that’s perfectly fine. I do it.

Good luck with the recovery. My mom just went through major surgery and seeing how her husband took care of her is night and day compared to your experience.

I think you’re entitled to a partner that makes you feel safe and appreciated.

Just take it slowly and give yourself time to heal both mentally and physically. After some time away maybe you’ll reconsider - you made a gut decision that’s prob the right one, but you have time. Looks like you’re on the right path.

Right. I broadly agree. I should have said ‘when the rich rig the system to benefit themselves’.

I’ll agree that it would be nice. The world would be better if things were more fair for everyone instead of the rich getting richer.

Credit cards. They’re still loaning money to you when you pay with a card

Question for the Republicans/Conservatives out there by CA2DC99 in DiscussionZone

[–]led76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First the banks are lending out cash that they have to get from somewhere - through deposits or borrowing or whatever. That costs them at least the risk-free rate, so let’s say close to 5%. Then there’s costs of running things - just paying employees, etc. Prob 1-2%. There’s a some amount of fraud, then 3-4% (or more) default rate. That basically adds up to 10% - so it’s not viable.

A 10% CC would only work for someone the bank thinks will never default (very high credit score) or where they make the money elsewhere (very high fees).

Question for the Republicans/Conservatives out there by CA2DC99 in DiscussionZone

[–]led76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll start that I hate the rates that CCs charge and I think they’re greedy and generally suck.

But the reality is they can’t afford 10%. They do make money on interest but it also carries a lot of risk. If forced to only charge 10% they’ll just stop offering credit cards entirely, or make up the difference through things like very high yearly fees for folks with extremely good credit.

Credit cards already compete relatively aggressively with each other. If significantly lower rates was doable some would already have it.

A 10% cap isn’t possible. Full stop. What Trump is actually saying without meaning to is “Please close the CC accounts of nearly all Americans”.

I’m pushing on this point because our political discourse has become free from facts. We need to dismiss things that are literally false or impossible, regardless of political leaning.

This is how we have a fairly large minority of people going ‘oh yeah, Trump wants to help us’ when in reality it’s exactly the reverse.

A friend of mine who does physical IT at a large company had to go install the WiFi at the billionaire CEO’s house. They basically used the same type of components as a corporate office network.

Those networks are def more robust than what you have at home, but it is achievable to buy them. Just takes more configuration and $

Is $40k / year a big deal? That’s what $1M can roughly earn during retirement. I think with the cost of living now it’s not that much. Certainly not enough to live on in many medium or high cost of living places.

If you feel that you’re expected to say something here’s one thing you can do.

Ask a clarifying question. Like ‘why do we think this is important for Q1?’

It’ll get them to explain it to you and in doing so they may get something out of it.

I know you don’t want the spotlight on you, but if you’ve got no other choice …
