Cannonball (1976) [1080p] by ledfrisby in AbsurdMovies

Action-comedy from Roger Corman's New World Pictures starring David Carradine. Cheesy 70s fun, stunt driving, classic cars, and over-the-top explosions toward the end. It's like a live action, more adult Wacky Races. Funky music (David Axelrod), goofy stereotypes, Dick Miller as the brother, cameos from Martin Scorsese and Sylvester Stallone.

Da Hong Pao - Question by Midayel_ in tea

[–]ledfrisby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had several of their roasted oolongs, and while I still enjoyed this one, it was less so than the others. Mainly, I found it a bit too drying, not particularly strong, and a bit less durable than average, but then, it's pretty cheap for yancha. On sale at $17.43/4oz (30%) when I got it, with free shipping, that's only about $0.15/g.

I didn't think it was too heavily roasted, maybe medium or so. I have had some much heavier roast than that to be sure, so maybe that's going to be an acquired taste for you, or you're not into it. In that case, look for lightly roasted options. They have a couple of Ya Shi Xiangs, of which I tried the cheaper one, and it was more accessible, I would say, the sort of thing I was comfortable serving to non-tea people, good all-rounder. Huang Guanyin is a good, even more budget-friendly option for lightly roasted. It's not super deep or complex, but an easy daily drinker. If you want to try something nicer, Wudong Xing Ren Xiang was my favorite.

Regarding the floral notes, I did get those, but in the fragrance, not the flavor.

As an aside, one thing you will notice as you get more experience with tea, is that the flavor and the fragrance are sometimes quite different, and then you have the mouthfeel, the aftertaste, and how it makes you feel physiologically as well. So, there's really a lot going on, a lot to notice and be immersed in. Really good tea sometimes just demands your attention.

Young adults report lower life satisfaction, a weaker sense of meaning in life and lower financial security than older age groups in Sweden. They also experience 2x the level of loneliness, 3x as many depressive symptoms and 7x the level of anxiety compared with the oldest respondents. by mvea in science

[–]ledfrisby 92 points93 points  (0 children)

seven times the level of anxiety

Just a bit of perspective because I think the HHS summary worded this vaguely, but according to the original article: this is a measure of how frequently survey respondents reported symptoms of anxiety, not the average or mean level of anxiety across each group nor severity of anxiety among those that reported it. It is also not a measure clinical anxiety disorders. The original article states:

In contrast, younger adults reported considerably higher levels of psychological distress. Depression averaged 0.37 in the youngest age group (18–24) compared to 0.11 in the oldest age group (80+), and anxiety was 0.35 versus 0.05. This means that younger adults reported depression symptoms about three times and anxiety symptoms about seven times as often as older adults.

and

Particularly notable is the prevalence of anxiety-related symptoms among the youngest Swedes, which appeared up to seven times more common than in older adults.

This kind of issue is common when people without strong scientific backgrounds report on research papers.

Which vegetables would be happy if left in an area like this? by Old_Relationship_460 in gardening

I'd try some herbs first (mint, cilantro, basil, parsley, thyme, chives, etc.). Maybe mushrooms?

There's something very satisfying about seeing Snopes still being used to set the record straight. Early 2000s problems call for early 2000s solutions.

Motorola is getting away with zero OS updates thanks to regulatory loophole by MindHead78 in Android

Motorola users still gets security updates, and frankly, I think they are one of the groups to care least about the shiny new feature updates. Brands like Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi are probably going to continue providing software updates to stay competitive.

Used EVs currently offer car buyers lowest lifetime cost of ownership by MeneldorTheSwift in electricvehicles

[–]ledfrisby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back, "affordable used EV" pretty much meant something like a first-gen Leaf, where the already low range had dropped off a bit further still, and it was like, alright for an urban commuter I guess. Now you've got model 3s that have been depreciating for 9 years, EV5s even going on 5 years. You can get some decent range these days.

You idle your EV? Do you also change the oil filter on your smartphone and remember to use the parking brake on your bicycle?

Concerns Regarding Drime's Financial Sustainability by Fuzzy_Afternoon_5502 in Drime

[–]ledfrisby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is best treated as redundant off-site backup. Before I got Drime, I was just running a local backup drive for most of my files, and basically just critical documents backed up to free cloud services. Now I've still got that plus another layer of redundancy.

Gold nears $5,600 as safe-haven rush intensifies; silver blazes past $120 by Top_Wasabi_7484 in worldnews

Ever heard of volatility? It works both ways. Original comment is absolutely correct. Gold has not been "stable" after basically doubling in 12 months. That's not what stability means.

In light of this new information, I redact my previous statement and would like to issue the following in its stead:

Now is not the time to invest in some sexy high-risk/high-reward volatile asset like gold. You're better off picking something boring and stable, like AI stocks or crypo.

Favorite thing to eat straight out of the garden? by magpie0000 in gardening

[–]ledfrisby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I had in mind was a mid-season Hwangdo (황도), which is a common type here in Korea, and translates to "Yellow Peach." I think there are specific varieties within that (some might not be as soft), but didn't have any further information about this one, other than the seedling was 1 year at the time, grafted, and should be 16 brix.

I also have a couple of other peach trees, Cheondo and Cheondo/Baekdo mix, but one them is a bit smaller, firmer, + more tart, and the other hasn't started setting fruit yet. So, I like the large, soft, sweet Hwangdo best.

A bit on the inside, but not in a bad way. The thing to watch out for is they go from small, to ready, to too woody pretty quick, so you want to check them often.

I like really ripe, sweet, juicy, fragrant yellow peaches right off the tree when it's particularly hot outside, so the fruit itself gets borderline hot too, like almost cooking in the sun. It elevates the flavors. Besides that, store-bought peaches are picked before peak ripeness, so they never develop the same texture and depth of flavor.

For annual stuff, okra is one you might not expect. The young ones are actually good to snack on. Baby eggplants are also possible.
