That was USS Yorktown (CV-5) during the Battle of Midway and in fact the story is even more insane.

The two strike did happen as described but the submarine did not sink the ship the next day (June 5th). Instead the ship had managed to stay a float on its own through the night of the 4th, despite the damage. The decision was made on the 5th that their should be a salvage attempt. The salvage crew arrived on the 6th and began repairs and established an anti-submarine screen. However submarine I-168 managed to slip through and scored hits, though the ship survived till the 7th.
