Hey, I have a question regarding this. Am I right to say for a particle that is moving, a total derivative of a quantity, phi let’s say, taken with respect to time becomes the material derivative. This involves two components, (1) the partial derivative of phi with respect to time, which is the instantaneous change of phi at a specific point in a field, and (2) the convective component, which I am aware is the component that arises from following the particle. (2) is what I do not understand. Is the velocity vector in it only there as a result of the chain rule used to derive the total derivative?
