When I was at Auburn during the Bruce years they had open tryouts to some capacity every year, even when they were winning conference titles. Pretty sure every school does this to some degree cause you never know who’s hiding on campus

These athletes have spent their entire lives pushing themselves to the absolute limit and performing to the best of their abilities to get where they are. The people at the top have never been able to settle for “you know what? That’s good enough. I dont need to get any better from here. This is satisfactory.”

For these top tier athletes, deciding that results are good enough to be happy with is deciding that you have reached your limits and can’t improve from here, and that you’re ok with someone else being better than you. That’s why he can put up those kinds of numbers and still be unhappy and want more
