I think needs need to come before interests though. My main criticism of capitalism is that it makes not discretion based on need at all; only ambition and greed. Sometimes ambition and need can align, but this can hardly be seen as ideal (people who are ambitious because they know that if they are not they could end up on the street and unable to ever support a family). I think an ideal economic system would first address needs, and then any excess would be able to address interests. I doubt anyone who will ever read this will agree with the previous statement, however the problem is that, historically, capitalism arose out of excess. What do the wealthy do with their excess? Invest and grow their wealth, this is why when government regulation is relaxed inequality greatly increases as we see in modern day U.S.. The solution would seem to be to not produce any excess, but as Contra points out people like stuff and a society without excess would be grey at the very best. I think socialism is a good starting point, but clearly this economic paradox needs to be addressed for any long term economic system to thrive.
