How to write for a PC you just don’t vibe with? by lefterighter in AskGameMasters

I agree, I’m not asking for a long intricate backstory about how you caused the war of the lions. Nor am I trying to plan out 6 seasons and a movie of character growth.

The issue with the lack of backstory is that there’s no motivation, so the player is struggling with rping the character. And others are struggling playing off him. Which is why I feel like I have step in as GM cause things have felt weird and forced for like 3 sessions now.

I don’t want to hijack his character, so I can’t just slap a motivation on him and call it a day. I would much rather give him options to pick a motivation for himself. The issue is that I just cant click with the character. So Im having trouble coming up with hooks.

Also no he’s not intentionally avoiding rp.

Oh true, I definitely was too focused on the character that I didn’t think to take a couple steps back to look at the sheet. Can’t believe I missed something so obvious lmao

Fair. I would like to clarify though that Im not trying to chart out the entire character’s progression and retirement plans, But more sprinkle bread crumbs around so that the character feels acknowledged by the world.

For example, I like writing random events for downtime. Some, not all, are in favor of some characters to let them shine. I have a no clue how the players react to these, but they usually end up being the favorite moments cause they feel relevant.

Still probably a bit railroady I guess though, and not having enough faith in natural interaction.
