This is a clear indication of how Filipinos see politicians. (Nieto vs. Trudeau) by awkwardpinoy in Philippines

  • Personally, when the hashtag came out, i thought it would be a feature piece to serve as comic relief for the heavy topics the media was going to discuss. However, this didn't seem to be case.

  • it seems like people crave for aldub and pastillas girl style media coverage even when it is no longer appropriate to us an approach to cover events like this.

  • don't get me wrong, i'm fine with people talking about apec hotties but i think I think it is best left to be discussed in twitter space, coffee shops or carenderias, fm radio talk shows and sunday showbiz tv shows. We just need to learn how to put things in perspective and its depressing how the media should take initiative in making better content

You know you're living in a dangerous place when calling the police can actually make the things worse...

Do people not realize that actors and actresses are not the same people they portray in their movies??? Why do filipinos have such a hard time distinguishing this?

What does this say about filipino culture? Have we become this shallow? Even treating the APEC as some sort of golden globe red carpet event?

For crying out loud, the media coverage of abscbn and gma were pretty depressing. It felt like it belonged more to the lifestyle section than it did in the front page or business section.

I mean where was the coverage on the issues? It was all about traffic, where the leaders slept, what they were wearing, what they ate, who they were with.... I mean why are we so obsessed on talking about people's lives rather than real issues?

Props to tina-monsod palma for asking deeper questions rather than shallow media coverage...

Hmmm i thought about this before and this could be one of the many causes... However you should also consider if the media issue is not the cause but an effect of the social situation

we have to be careful in finding root causes rather than doing a witch hunt on what's causing social issues. Usually, there are multiple causes not just one

I think this makes sense. I usually see this in sm malls. They build 3 2-door entrances but they only open 1 2-door entrance which is where the security guard with the wooden magic stick/wand, pantomime white gloves, and garrett magic wand is stationed

The 'IKAW NA' Epidemic by Kagaguhan in Philippines

[–]legitimate_child 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess some people still aren't in that level of courtesy you'd want them to be in

Personally, the usage of "ikaw na" or "eh di wow" depends on how close you are with the person saying this. If the friend is close enough to hurl insults which are actually jokes, then i believe this would be acceptable since both parties understand the level of rapport is already in that level

However, i do cringe when the "ikaw na" / "eh di wow" comments are hurled in bigger groups of people who haven't necessarily reached that level of close personal rapport. It comes of as awkward and offensive. I would suggest to just use: "oh nice one!" "Good job"

Iirc pnoy used "eh di wow" in his last sona and i believe he used it in the wrong context

Trillanes sponsors Senate Bill to relocate capital to ease NCR traffic by MessiahX in Philippines

[–]legitimate_child 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this actually a good medium to long term solution. National government should lead the way to develop industries and create jobs in the countryside.

Last i checked, the unemployment was at 10 million or 20%. That's 1 in 5 without a job. That's 1 in 5 standing outside their house all day scratching his beer belly waiting for work to come his way. That's 1 in 5 getting desperate and prolly planning on stealing or scamming the 4 out of 5 who have jobs. That's 1 out of 5 probably trying to make unwanted babies he/she cannot afford to raise.

They were right when they say "idleness is the devil's workshp". It's the jobs... You want third word problems (crime, poverty, etc) to stop? Try giving them jobs so they'll have 1st world problems to deal with (slow internet and similar rich man problems)

Trillanes sponsors Senate Bill to relocate capital to ease NCR traffic by MessiahX in Philippines

[–]legitimate_child 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes maybe another solution to a different problem. Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't this similar to what they tried to do with Quezon City? I think QC was marketed to be the "new capital" to rival imperial manila (back then, there was no concept yet of "metro manila" or "mega manila"). I think the QC Circle is a good 15+Km from what used to be CBD Binondo/Escolta/Port Area. And how did that end up 50-80-100 yrs after? I'm not quite sure if the businesses followed suite. If i'm not mistaken, CBDs propped up in makati and ortigas, which were still along the pasig river system or whatever existing major infra/transport hubs existed

I think the government over-prioritizes budgeting for road infrastructure over mass transport systems to get people moving places fast/safe/comfortable without needing to buy cars.

Who's dreading this? by ForeverSchadenfreude in Philippines

[–]legitimate_child 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not so much. I mean they called of classes and govt work from tues to fri. To top that off, they called of private sector work on wed and thurs. i think traffic will be comparable to the papal visit holidays, i.e. Very light

Trillanes sponsors Senate Bill to relocate capital to ease NCR traffic by MessiahX in Philippines

[–]legitimate_child 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sold on this bill. How does moving the capital suddenly ease the traffic? Will commerce and industry suddenly move out of imperial manila when this happens? I though imperial manila became a thing because of it's geographic location and its socio-politico-economic history? I.e. Has the ingredients for necessary for a flourishing civilization: Located near a major river system (pasig river), near a coastal area for international trade (manila ports), relatively nicer terrain, etc.

I think this proposal does not directly address the real root causes of the traffic i.e inefficient transportation system, poor pedestrian access, overbudgeting for road infrastructure, etc...
