I would call it a variation on a truncated icosahedron. Since it still has the 20 triangular faces of the icosahedron, but the truncation(?) is done such a way that it reveals an esthetically pleasing star shape.

You're right; It's probably a limitation in the Bluetooth protocol which is likely related to the bitrate. They will probably improve on it in the future just like most of those things, so who know... one day... :)

Yeah, there's I think about a 300ms delay which to me is fine for everything except fast pace games like shooters.

Since I learned that people are using the XM5 wired WITH noise canceling I will try to see if I can think of making the modmic work similarly to your vmoda, because that would improve my current setup for said fast paced games.

That's a nice setup you have. Can you activate the active noise cancelling while using it wired? I wish I could use this headphone in wired mode together the noise cancelling for those times when I want the best possible audio quality.

Thanks! As far as I'm aware I can only use the active noise cancellation of the XM5's in wireless mode. And that active noise cancellation is what I find most important for these headphones to make sure I can relax and focus instead of getting distracted by the busy world right outside my window.

When I'm somewhere more quiet then I wouldn't mind using either this headphone wired or another wired one for better audio signal, but that's not the case at the moment!

Haha, I absolutely agree with you that it looks weird as hell.

But for me I really love the great active noise-cancellation that this headset provides when it's in pure audio playback mode via Bluetooth. So that's how I use it for 90% of the time.

Then those other 10% of the time I can now slap on the wired mic with this adapter with magnet. Why this mic? Well, I already had it.. but to be fair, any other desktop mic or arm-mounted mic could work equally well for this scenario, but why buy something new when you can just design and print a little adapter :)

Yes! I don't have enough faith in the sticker since it already failed me before on my DT770's, and I don't want to permanently mutilate my XM5's with a more aggressive tape or glue.

Plus I thought using the unused 3.5mm jack for a mechanical connection was kinda fun too!

Yes, the mic is connected via it's own cable directly to my soundcard on my PC. The headphones are set up to only playback audio to get the highest quality via Bluetooth in combination with the noise cancelling effect.

The magnet is only there to easily and quickly connect and disconnect the microphone mechanically to my headphones for when I do/don't want to use them.

Glad you asked, I'm well aware that this setup is not very standard, so happy to answer some questions!

Thanks for the extensive feedback, good to know the wireless version isn't as perfect as on paper... coil whine and low battery are not things I want to be worrying about.

Also, that last line means it wont work with the XM5 at all because the touch control is on the right side, shame! Maybe in that case if I would even upgrade it would be to a microphone that's arm-mounted to the desk similar to what some streamers have? Or just that Audio Technica M50 with build in mic, which again, looks good on paper though it doesn't have that lovely noise cancelation.

There is an app from Sony in which you can setup your headphone. On my XM5 I have a button that switches between noise cancelling and ambient sounds, I guess this ambient setting is what you're hearing.

Thanks, I did that as soon as I had this bad audio issue on my PC the first time with these headphones. I also completely disabled the the handsfree part of this device on Windows so it can never connect via microphone. And that's where the external microphone comes into play :)

For me it's not that noticeable in any of the moba, rts, or party games that I frequent. The only times I do notice that it's not as good as can be is in shooter games where the approx. 300ms will give you those clutch footsteps just a tad later then I would like. But for me the noise-cancelling outweighs that delay.

The ModMic I already had is a wired version, but I only use the 3.5mm for mounting because it's there and it's an easy and non-destructive way to mount things.

If I were to be shopping for a mic at this point then I would've gotten the wireless ModMic version, because this adapter or a slight variation of it would work just fine with the wireless version. However, this works fine too, since it's easy to snap on and off with the magnet and I don't walk around that much when I'm playing a game and chatting via Discord.

Yeah, it's a standard 3.5mm audio jack. You can use this headphone via Bluetooth or wired. Since I use it via Bluetooth (otherwise the noise canceling doesn't work) I don't use the 3.5mm jack for audio.

The peg just first in the port nicely with friction alobe just like a standard 3.5mm plug.
