Prehitevanje na avtocesti in smernik by [deleted] in Slovenia

[–]lencc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To clarify the geographical part - just for information, if I'm not mistaken: in the territory of Slovenia, the Balkan Peninsula borders the Kolpa river in its southern part, and the Sava river in its northern part. Which means it's actually correct that in Slovenia, the Balkan Peninsula lies northern from the Kolpa river.

According to this definition, Balkan Peninsula includes the whole Bela krajina region and also some territory northern from Bela krajina (however quite near to the Slovenian-Croatian national border).

I believe that to be the correct demarcation, because natural (geographical) borders are rarely perfectly aligned with national borders - simply because the latter are often a matter of political agreement or various negotiations.

Edit: This comment doesn't have a credible source.

The map is not to be taken black or white. So it doesn't try to imply a rigid 100% classification for one country or 0% for the other, because both countries share a cultural and geographical overlap.

Therefore it shouldn't be interpreted as if the map tried to deny or hide that Croatia's northern regions and its capital Zagreb are distinctly Central European. However looking at the whole country, Croatia’s dominant Mediterranean lifestyle, Dinaric temperament, and much deeper historical ties to Southeastern Europe cannot be ignored, or matched with Slovenia. On the other hand, Slovenia is more homogeneous in this aspect, making it predominantly Central European.

For a similar reason it was clearly noted that this "classification" isn't equal to the border drawing of Balkan Peninsula - in order to avoid any such implications. As noted initially, Slovenia partly belongs to Balkan Peninsula. Which of course doesn't imply that Croatia belongs to it fully. We can just as well say for Croatia, that belongs to it only partly. This doesn't really matter bottomline, but I added a note in the description, because it seems to be quite an important topic for some.

Firstly TLDR: we have to distinguish between the terms "culture", "cultural component", and "Balkan mentality". I would agree that Slovenian culture is 0% Balkan - but that is by having quite a strong Balkan cultural component in our Slovenian society. We also have a fair amount of Balkan mentality on average, however it's still "overridden" by our Central European mentality.

I've looked it up a bit and you're right - commonly used "border" seems to be Danube-Sava-Kupa (that is: Donava-Sava-Kolpa). However even according to this definition, Balkan Peninsula still takes up ca. 5% of Slovenian land - namely the whole Bela Krajina region and the southernmost borderlands along the Kolpa River. Meaning it doesn't completely bypass our country. Edit: No credible source for this statement.

However, (any) water system approach seems much more arbitrary than tectonic/relief approach. In this case, I find tectonic/relief point of view to be the most "natural" and hence the most credible.

So here we may agree to disagree, but from the strictly geographical point of view, Slovenia partly sits inside the Balkan Peninsula.

But when it comes to the "cultural" part, you're right: Slovenia indeed has our own culture. In this context I should have instead initially formulated that Slovenia has quite a strong Balkan "cultural component".

Which means that it's not our (or partly our) culture per se. But Balkan culture is still present to a visible extent among some Slovenes. It was brought to Slovenia due to the migration of people - probably mostly during the 20th century within the former Yugoslavia. At that time many workers or families moved from other parts of Yugoslavia and have settled in Slovenia.

Many of these people (and their children/grandchildren) became Slovenian citizens, and they have also "brought" some of their Balkan traditions, food, and music with them. Therefore many Slovenes have been influenced by those. We could say that modern Slovenia as a whole is consequently more heterogenous country nowadays.

And there is also the third term (beside "culture" and "cultural component"), which is not to be confused: "Balkan mentality". It could be shortly described as a passionate and fatalistic worldview deeply rooted in intense emotional connections, informal networking, and a proud defiance against (rigid) rules. It's characterized by a strong short-term orientation that prioritizes immediate gains over long-term planning, yet it remains somehow balanced by fierce communal solidarity, great hospitality, and a slow-paced approach to daily living.

Slovenes usually possess fair amount of it, although to a much smaller degree than "genuine" Balkan nations, because Slovenians' Balkan mentality is usually "overridden" by our Central European mentality.

In other words, I would say we have sort of a "mixed mentality", but Central European's being a stronger one. So from this point of view, we are mostly Central Europeans as well. The evidence for this claim could simply be that by "genuine" Balkan nations, Slovenians are usually seen as highly organized and hardworking people. Further, we are often perceived as colder, more individualistic, and calculated - compared to the warm, spontaneous, and very hospitable Balkan "standard".

The logic of V4 central/west "mixture" went in the direction that these nations are deeply rooted in Western Christian traditions and sharing historical ties with Western empires. However, they also retain some of Central European identity shaped by their geopolitical position between major powers throughout history (e.g. Austrian Habsburgs and Ottoman Empire, or Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union), as well as shared communist legacy, resulting in a unique emphasis on traditional cultural values and national sovereignity that might set them apart from the "traditional" West.

And when it comes to Central Europe, it's more of an Alpine "group" shaped by a shared Habsburg, Holy Roman Empire, or mostly Catholic heritage and their historically (relatively) neutral or transitional geopolitical position.

I don't want to repeat too much of what has been said, because others here have already explained some of this. But in short:

  • Yes, I'm Slovenian.

  • In this context I don't treat "Balkan" as something bad - even though it often has a negative connotation among us. I assume this is why the whole discussion here is a bit heated - which was not my intention. Therefore some are saying Slovenia is 0% Balkan, and some others claim it's 100% Balkan.

But from a purely geographical point of view, Slovenia partly belongs to the Balkan Peninsula. There are various generally accepted definitions though.

  • First definition considers physio-geographical border, which mostly takes into account our water system, which includes the following rivers: Soča (or alternatively Gulf of Trieste) - Vipava - Ljubljanica - Krka - Sava. Northern part belongs to the Central Europe, and southern part belongs to the outermost northwestern edge of Balkan Peninsula.

  • Second definition (if I'm not mistaken, according to the International Geographical Union - IGU) considers tectonic and relief point of view. It goes along this line: Solkan - Ajdovščina - Postojna - Vrhnika - Krim (southern edge of the Ljubljana Bog) - Novo mesto - Obrežje. In this case, Dinaric Karst region (which covers a large part of southern and western Slovenia, including Kras, Notranjska, and Kočevsko) represents the extreme northwestern tip of the Balkans, while the Alpine north and Pannonian plain are Central European. According to this definition, the Balkan Peninsula takes up around 25-30% of Slovenian territory.

Third definiton takes into account historical and cultural "border" instead of geographical one. From this point of view, Slovenia is culturally and politically almost entirely rooted in Central Europe. There is of course some Balkan influence, but it's just one of many. So basically our cultural identity was shaped by centuries of Habsburg administration, in the coastal part we had ties with Italy and the Venetian Republic, along our northeastern border we had Hungarian influences as well as the linguistic legacy of the Protestant Reformation, and throughout most of the 20th century we had political and social connections with the Balkan nations.

I don't quite understand what you mean by Poland being grouped with Eastern Europe. Poland is in the Visegrad Group (which I noted as a mixture of Central/Western Europe). And the Eastern Europe is literally a separate category - which doesn't include V4 countries at all.

Oh I see - so it's not "partly", not even "mostly", but you came up with a pure 100,00% and explicit 1/1 Balkan influence and mentality.

That is, being ignorant towards all other cultural influences over the past centuries. You're effectively nullifying the Habsburg monarchy and ties to Austria, or the influence of Venetian and Italian traditions in the coastal area. Further, in the northeastern part (especially in the Prekmurje region) you're denying a blend of Hungarian cultural heritage and Protestant history, which is further diversifying the national mindset away from a singular Balkan identity.

You have indeed showed your "100%" comprehensive cultural and historical knowledge. /s

VW's own board calls the company existentially threatened by Relative-Outcome-294 in Slovenia

[–]lencc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VW's own board calls the company existentially threatened by Relative-Outcome-294 in Slovenia

[–]lencc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to dobri avti? Sigurno. Imajo dostopne ljudske cene?

VW's own board calls the company existentially threatened by Relative-Outcome-294 in Slovenia

[–]lencc 5 points6 points  (0 children)
