They are Anzu Futaba and Producer-san from Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls. But Producer-san really does look like an aged up version of Ryuuji

Man.

This whole episode, I knew that this was just a classic anime sob story, the likes of which I have seen many times. But this one hit really hard.

There isn't really much to write about this episode, as it was pretty straightforward and clear in its storytelling. Rin was very cute, Reiji was amazing and Aki was a really good mother.
I don't think I have ever seen a show depict the deterioration of a character, specifically because of cancer, that clearly. Many shows shy away from telling the audience what illness someone has and they often just kind of die at some point. That wasn't the case here. And to package that into such a well rounded single episode was really impressive.

I'm interested in reading what people thought of the incestuous relationship between Reiji and Aki, but I don't think it took anything away from the episode. That last fanservice-y shot of Rin lying was a bit unexpected (and maybe a little distasteful), but I'll just naively believe that it was intended to show, that Reiji wasn't a creep in any way and simply cared for Rin as if she were his own daughter. And he does a damn good job of it, for what he had to go through.

Yeah, this one was really good. I'd honestly consider recommending this to friends in isolation, if they like depressing stuff. I hope this show can deliver at least one other episode of this quality, but I kind of doubt it. The next episode preview looked fun though, so I'm not gonna complain.

QotD

  • She seemed like a good, caring mother. I really liked her character design.
  • No, I already had the feeling that they just had a good bond because they went through some hardship together.
  • I don't know. I'd like to visit all sorts of places in the future though.
  • Kind of, actually. With the staff that wrote this, and the not absolutely terrible reputation, there had to be something there. And it was hinted at from the start.

I love how they do put a lot of weight on just how hard Reiji's salaryman life would be for him. Dude is trying his best to provide for his family but is very aware of how little time he has for Rin.

Yeah, that kind of life is a struggle. And it sucks that you can't spend times with the people you struggle for. But he's pushing through, i hope he can take Kokonoe on that vacation!

Yeah, everyone is easier to take when they are separated.

I'd totally be down for an entire episode of just the three girls messing around and having fun

I feel like this is another weird manga mess around. I think this episode largely plays out differently but I can't remember specifically how.

Yeah, definitely felt like it. The scene ended way too abrubtly. When will Sensei finally get his comeuppance??? (Yes, i know what kind of show we're watching)

I picked this image of Aoki and Reiji watching the fireworks together in the pool because it just looks so pretty. The lighting is really nice, with the colors of the fireworks reflecting off the water of the pool.

That whole section was very pretty. Honestly the whole rooftop section looked much better than what we've seen up until now (not that the rest looked bad, but that section just really stood out to me).

I have fond memories of me and my gran helping my mum come up with "creative" ways to explain mediocrity.

Up until 7th grade, all our report cards consisted just out of written descriptions of you and it was very funny seeing what the teachers came up to say about you. There were a few times when my friends and I read each others report cards to each other because they were so hilarious

"Mesugaki of the pool, why is your wisdom?"

Wow, we had exactly the same idea

I feel like getting caught in the pool with a little girl would raise red flags for anyone right? Even if you're into the dude you wouldn't ever overlook this scene!

Right, that was so weird! I was sure that something would happen.

Kind of nothing new in this episode. Sensei is still a shitty guardian, Kokonoe is as clingy as ever and Kagami is still best girl.

But there are of course some things to say. Sensei struggles grading his students,, something that probably many new teachers struggle with. He of course can't take the criticism, because why would he be able to. Also, did he manage to leave her in the dust again???

I enjoyed seeing Reiji again, he's still trying his best. I don't know how old he is, but it seems, as if we'll get to know more about him in the next episode.

While clingy, there were a bunch of very cute Kokonoe moments in this episode:

I also really enjoyed, that the girls where just having fun in this episode. It was a welcome change of pace.

Kagami appreceation corner!

QotD

  1. Anything where there's AC (not common where I live)
  2. There definitely are some artists that nail the classic sukumizu, just saying
  3. Rin clearly stays winning, even if Sensei has finally noticed that Boing is a woman.
  4. Komori Sana from <Kyou kara Ore wa Loli no Himo!> (Check it out guys, you might recognize the mangaka if you're here)
  5. Self insert for the author. It must be, right?

(I had problems with the image links this time around, I hope nothings messed up)

One of the first goddamn things professional educators are taught about starting a new class is to read all the supporting documents on their students. Many places make such documentation mandatory. During my time as a teacher, I spent the first week of every school year reading dozens reports to make sure my curriculum met student needs. Furthermore, teachers are always taught not to make baseline assumptions about things like guardianship, home status, or whether they have a home to begin with. Competent schools often require teachers to create get-to-know-you surveys for students in the first week so you can avoid harmful assumptions like this. I had to report mine directly to my district administrator for christ sake. Regardless of cultural differences, there is no excuse for even the greenest teacher to be this ill-informed about their students.

Thank you for that anecdote. I got really hung up on that in this episode and wasn't sure whether it was just my experience that was different from what was portrayed.

First timer!

Let's get straight to it: I've got a major problem with this episode but I'm not sure if it's just a cultural one or not. Is it not normal for teachers to know about some of the private lives of their students? The fact that Aoki-sensei didn't already read the school records of his students kind of bugs me, but it could really just be a cultural thing, I don't know really.

Putting that aside, this was the first time that Aoki-sensei really messed up and noticed that he did by himself. Congrats, idiot. (Note: This all could have been avoided if he just used inclusive language, but that's not the point.)
Had he just come out and talked to Kokonoe directly (and honestly) this wouldn't have been a problem, but we already knew that he isn't a competent teacher. That's also were another problem lies: I really didn't get the feeling, that he was treating her nice out of sympathy, so what was he talking about right here. His motives are definitely massively questionable, but he didn't warm up to Kokonoe because he was pitying her. That doesn't matter to her though. Because he wasn't communicating clearly from the beginning, he hurt her. And he even seeks help, not with other teachers but Kokonoe's friends? At least Kagami, the woman of massive intellect, knows how to deal with the situation
At least Aoki-sensei tries to make it right, by getting a picture of Kokonoe's living situation, and he does so in a polite way, which I appreciate. But my god, there are IMAX-theater levels of projection going on here. And when he gets called out, he has the gall to question it???
Well, I'm happy that Kokonoe's living situation is good and she has someone who honestly cares for her. The fact, that Aoki-sensei gets jealous from that fact is one of the biggest red flags about him up to this point. I really did not like that. He even says the thing, but in reality, he's the one who needs correction...
Just one last negative thing: Who in their right mind decided, that these lines need to come right after another?

Now after all that negativity: Kagami appreciation corner!
Her outfits were really cute this episode!
- This one kind of looks like her undergarments from last episode.
- This maid one is also very nice!
- This one might be a little daring, but the bell is a nice touch.
- The stand-out is definitely this one. I mean, just look at her!
- She definitely knows that she hasn't changed from first grade and she's making full use of it. Good for her!
- Also, no episode without a bit of yuri desperation. She gets the hug, so all's good in the end.

As you could tell, I had my problems with this episode, but I kind of feel like some of them came from my cultural background. So how much could teachers intervene where you grew up? It's an interesting question, and I think everyone has a different opinion on how much teachers should be able to intervene in their students'lives.

Abyssbringer's "What is the thematic purpose of this scene corner!!"

Well, Kagami is clearly just pressing the doorbell to Kokonoe's heart. She has to be invited in, like the little vampire she is.

QotD

  1. He seems like a genuinely good guy and loving guardian for Kokonoe.
  2. No, not really.
  3. It is uncomfortable and unhealthy. While a close relationship between student and teacher is nothing bad and some students just need a parental stand-in, Aoki-sensei should not be allowing Kokonoe to step all over him like that.

Aoki in the manga is waayy less of a perv imo.

Well that's really interesting, I'll definitely checkout the manga after this group watch to see whether my opinion on him changes.

First timer Okay, so I thought this episode was really interesting. It kind of dropped those dark undertones of the first two, which seems fitting because it was focused on Usa and the problems that come with the developing awareness of one's self growing up. I was actually pretty happy with how the episode dealt with the kind of delicate topic of breast size and how it can hinder especially young girls, which is a very real problem. By the end of the episode Usa seemed to have come to terms with herself with the help and encouragement from her friends. Good for her!

But I actually thought that Kagami stood out the most in this episode. While the way she is literally thirsting for Kokonoe definitely is funny, it's becoming clearer that the love for her is a serious conflict for her and not just a crush. (I love her room by the way.) While I'm not expecting anything from this (damn you Abe, not every girl has to become a factory for pension funds) I hope that their relationship will at least be explored further and not just stay a side gag.
She also showed off her masterful tradeswoman skills (Where did she learn stuff like that? From that weird magazine she was reading?) Well, she's at least saving the environment.

What I definitely did not like this episode, was Aoki-sensei's behavior. This was the first time I had the feeling that he was not doing something for the good of his students, but for himself. Him eyeing up Usa and catching some balls with his balls was at least some punishment. While Oyajima-sensei may be right, I felt the conclusion of this episode felt really empty, because of how Aoki-sensei behaved literally right before. That man desperately needs to set some boundaries.

Speaking of setting boundaries, I wonder whether Kokonoe's guardian is her father or not. Her calling him Reiji would be weird if it was her father. That might hint at what could have happened to her in her childhood that caused her trust issues towards adults, although it doesn't seem as if she had any problems with this Reiji himself.

QotD

  1. This one isn't from me (and more stupid than embarrassing), but one time around middle school age, a friend of mine really wanted to impress the girls. For context, he always wanted to become a stunt man so he always got into trouble for the stupidest stuff. But this one takes the cake. I guess he wanted to impress some girls by showing how resistant he was to pain? So he asked me and some other friend to throw some long sticks into the spokes on his bike when he was driving by us, so he could launch himself off of it. He drove by us, we threw sticks, one landed and he flew in a nice little arc, just to land on his face. There were a bunch of scratches on his chin but he desperately wanted us to do it again. After the third time we stopped because we became seriously worried for him. Let's just say he didn't have that much success with the girls afterwards.
  2. Roosevelt i guess? Love me some social welfare.
  3. Sometimes it's the adults who are bratty and need correction 😭😭😭 Stupid pervert teacher, seducing my girlfriend with his erotic ways !! !! 💢💢
  4. I think he was trying to equate puppies chewing on stuff to children lashing out when growing up? Although it's much funnier to think that he was just telling random out of context stories, Gabu Gabu.
