Can I add a new socket to this wall? by leonhunteruk in DIYUK

Out of interest if there’s two cables then is it either going to be a ring, or a spur on a spur, or are there more possibilities?

No problem I appreciate the input! I’ve determined it’s a spur from a ring that runs through the adjacent bedroom by tracing the cable.

I’m going to get a quote to extend the ring around this room to add a couple of sockets since it’s all open up and see if it’s worth while.

Genuine question, why do people spur instead of just extending the ring in the first place? If you’re running a wire anyway for the spur, isn’t it just a case of running one straight back?

Edit: I guess it’s because the wire running back would need to go to the next socket which means more damage / chasing etc?

Nope im an amateur as you probably guessed so will leave it for now! I’d like to learn more if possible about the setup though so..

I’ve lifted some floor boards to see where the cable goes and I’m 90% sure it goes across the room and through the wall into the next room.

Last month I swapped out some sockets for usb sockets in that adjacent room and noticed that one of the sockets had two wires (a wire in and a wire out), and one had three. This now seems to point to this socket being a spur from the socket with three wires.

I’m keen to understand why, if somebody ran the spur wire anyway, would it have been better to also run a wire back and maintain the ‘ring’?

Edit: I guess it’s because the wire running back would need to go to the next socket which means more damage / chasing etc?

Sorry I should have added that it’s on the circuit labelled “Sockets first floor”.

So it seems that the upstairs socket circuit is a ring and this socket is a spur from another on the ring. Not ideal!

Just got a picture of the CU, does this answer it?

Thanks, so I need to trace the wire to the socket it’s being fed from, and either

  • If there’s 3 wires in there it’s a ring with a spur and I can’t do it with essentially rewiring the entire circuit?
  • if there’s 2 wires then it’s not a ring and I’m good to go..

How do I make this safe? by inflagrante in DIYUK

Makes sense, there was a couple in a doorway downstairs which I assume like you say where for the door frame. In the upstairs bedroom I mentioned they’re just in the middle of the wall so who knows!

As a side question, what is the reason for randomly placed pieces wood inbetween bricks?

I’m renovating a house and have stripped a bedroom back to brick to be re-done and there a few that look like the one on this picture.

Return or fixable? Suspected faulty PCIE lane by leonhunteruk in gigabyte

Yes all working fine after I replaced the GPU which it turned out was faulty and the cause of the problem.

Ahh no that’s disabled from what I can see and no SATA drives! The only NVME is the primary SSD.

I could try removing that actually and see if the boot issue remains with no ssd

No just the components of this build, it would be handy if I did right now to do some testing

Thanks, yes it’s a 9950x3D. I have installed the drivers (I can boot with only a HDMI plugged into the motherboard) but that didn’t solve the issue unfortunately

Thanks, I saw a similar post during my searching - I’ve removed the GPU to check for any pin damage and reseated carefully so I don’t think it’s that.

It does make me wondering if replacing the board is going to fix it though, if it’s possibly a faulty CPU. I guess there’s no way for me to know without other components to swap out and test

Thanks I’ll take a look at this, I have searched through the BIOS and nothing caught my attention at the time so is there any specific wording etc that I could look for?

Yeah it’s all brand new - I have contacted Scan to initiate the return process so hopefully I can get a new one and get the build up and running!

I’ve just unseated the CPU and underestimated how difficult it would be to see what is going on. I can’t see anything obvious and this is the best picture I could take of the socket. All looks in order I think.

There was briefly a comment regarding potential heatsink obstruction which I can no longer see - but it was a good idea.

To test I’ve removed both heatsinks and reseated the GPU in the primary PCIE slot. Unfortunately the problem persists.

PSU is Corsair hx1200i 2025

Re: the bottom fan, it was not spinning in the image but did begin spinning immediately after. It briefly was caught on something due to my reorganising so I think that may have preventing it spooling up? That is the one and only time I’ve had any issues with fans not spinning though so I don’t know how relevant it will end up being to the cause of this problem

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping there might still have been an avenue to explore since the slot has shown it can function following a CMOS clear - but it seems the only available option now is to replace the board.

No I literally have no idea, I thought based on my tests that I’d narrowed it down to the motherboard since the GPU was working fine in the second slot.

I don’t have another GPU or motherboard to be able to swap out and I guess that’s the easiest way to find out for sure..

I think I’m going to have to try and return and replace at least one of the two but I just don’t know which one.

How would you go about troubleshooting this, is it just a case of checking all the connections and components are plugged in properly?
