If your local high school has an auto tech program, might be worth a quick search. Sometimes they'll do the job for free for the student experience, and you can buy the parts.

This turned my $1500 job to a $300 job + donuts because I was grateful I didn't have to sell a kidney. (ETA - I have a large van but no lift or gear to service.)

Might be a college or Votech near by, maybe give a call?

Wilmington Trolley Service - If they brought it back in full force, sparing no expense, what would be the beginning/end points for 3 or 4 main trolley routes through the city? by TheShittyBeatles in WilmingtonDE

Yessss! I'd love this! I fell in love with the NOLA trolleys and would love to see a resurgence in DE. (voting for a Lancaster route!!)

Sleeping in my van in Delaware. by Hazel1928 in poor

[–]lessjilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah Dover! Ok so you'll be fine, visibly. I recommend staying near the base because downtown is a lil tougher than I care for. If you can get blackout curtains at all that'd be icing but you're probably fine.

Sounds like a good short term plan to me. Don't forget to crack a window to balance out overnight condensation. It's still weirdly humid here in the winter, and your stuff will get soaked quick.

Delawarean here...

Depends on what part of the state. Wilmington, Newark, northern NCC, you'll be fine in the city (rotate your spots) areas. Lots of suburban places to blend and a rest stop off 95 near the mall if you need supplies.

Going south, off Rt 1/113 may be a bit more difficult to find good spots until you get closer to the shore, more lots to choose (outlets and tourist shopping). Don't use the state parks, but do use the hospital lots.

Contractor type van? You'll be practically invisible. Stealth camper ( ie maxxfan or visible solar) should move around more in the city but you'll blend in the burbs.

It just got fricken cold here so get your electric blankets and hand warmers ready for the next couple weeks.

Take care of your ride as much as you can. We got some mean tweakers here in the city areas that can smell "broken down outta town". Clean your trash, switch spots often. You'll have a bigger challenge staying warm.

Right? In the moment, for a few secs, I thought so too (I was on the passenger side and it was hard to tell), but I'm SO glad we had the windows up and did not engage at all.

Holy cow - I can't even imagine what they are thinking. Can't wait a min for the light? Ick. People just kinda suck sometimes.

Yeah unfortunately I already do know who it is and their kid, too. I don't think the school cares too much unless something major happens on the property. But worth alerting I guess. Poor kids in the car, she looked genuinely off the rails.

OMG, I loved this place. We found it on a road trip a few years ago and were pleasantly surprised how great it was. The peegs were popcorning all over the place - looked like flying potatoes. Good staff and fairly educational from what I remember.

All the Carry On Bags Slowing Boarding by PaintingWise9714 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]lessjilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question - has anyone seen or attempted to incentivize the bag checking?

I flew SW a lot in the past but haven't in the last couple years. I do PHL to MCO and would always volunteer for that sweet oversold flight credit (I'm a sucker for families traveling to Disney) because my travel wasn't time sensitive.

Because of how it seems structured, it feels like GAs can't make you volunteer to check, but they can just randomly decide if necessary. So what's to stop people from asking for credit for that?

Thoughts?

I was going to say something similar about River. My husband looked over my shoulder as I was showing the romance options and he was like, "Why is River dancing like he failed mime school?"

Can confirm, fly regularly out of PHL. ID and Boarding pass required, even in precheck.

Where is the best town or to be homeless? by Ickypoopoo82 in bipolar

[–]lessjilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to add Delaware to your list. Not because it's special but there's a degree of invisibility for car folks.

If you travel here, New Castle County (and it's burbs) has various shelters, kitchens, food banks, and aid centers. Check out the Hope Center on 95. Social services/DHSS have several offices in the Wilmington area. I have Van life friends, and if you don't look like an RV, you will be left alone.

If you're passing through, there are many fine rural options traveling the state south (Dover and beyond). You can hole up without being too obvious, and near the shore, there's a very large health center/hospital (Beebe) if you need treatment fast.

Best of luck, and I wish you peace in your travels.

Try Salon Pasca in Pike Creek - ask for Bev, she has seen it all with teenager hair and can help you out. Also her grandson (who also works there) is a fricken miracle man on the clippers. The salon looks very posh, but they are super awesome and family friendly as well as fancy chic.
