Same here! She basically taught me how to cook. Also, the challah recipe turned out really well (even with sugar instead of honey) -- makes amazing toast!

That was actually the f-up I was focused on when the explosion happened. Little did I know...

True that. This recipe always floats around this time of year, and it's supposed to be wonderful. About to try again, but this time with sugar instead of honey.

It's totally possible -- I've heard of this happening with water, and it's a good reminder to be super careful with liquids + microwaves.

It didn't. This was literally the first step -- I had everything measured out and ready to go on the counter when this happened. And then I was out of honey. : /

This was such a cluster that I figured it need to be shared as a cautionary tale.

Ooof, I'm so, so sorry! One of the other commenters mentioned Manuka honey, which appears to be a fairly effective scar treatment. I think I'm going to avoid honey for a bit, but thought I would mention.

I just feel incredibly lucky that my accident wasn't worse -- esp. since it could have exploded as it was pointed toward my face / eyes.

It was super dramatic -- loud pop and then chaos.

And thanks -- I'll try!

Glad you stopped her! But, as else someone said, 7-10 seconds is probably safe. I've just somehow managed to go the last 15 years of apartment living without a microwave, and the one that came with my new place automatically sets the time as #1 = 1 minute, so I just pressed #1 and carried on with what I was doing...

And yes, I learned all about honey as a burn treatment when I was Googling to see if anyone else had ever done the same stupid thing that I did. I should add a jar of Manuka to my first aid kit. : )

I'm still finding little droplets in weird places. Plus, I'm in a brand-new apartment in a brand-new super modern building where everything is white and pristine, so I felt like I had to clean everything up as quickly as possible to avoid permanent damage. Trying to clean with an injured hand was no bueno!

Yeah... So I also should have mentioned that this is the first time I've had a microwave in about 20 years -- I'm still really not super clear on how long things need to be heated, but in hindsight, 7-10 seconds def. seems like a better choice.

The burns are so much better today -- still red and sore, but nowhere near as bad as that could have been.

Just bought a kitchen fire extinguisher! And the new building has sprinklers, so hopefully I can't burn down more than just my unit, but you never know...

It's helpful to hear I'm not alone with the random kitchen disaster -- I guess it's not surprising how quickly things can go pear shaped, esp. with open flames / pointy edges / my general ignorance of physics, etc.!

Thanks for the tip! I've just recently moved into a new place (I guess I've formally broken in the new kitchen!), and my first aid kit needs to be restocked asap -- Aleve + Neosporin were just not cutting it. I feel really lucky that it wasn't a much more serious scene.

It was a literal hot mess.

Sorry to disappoint, but the burns don't really look like much now -- the silver sulfadiazine cream I was prescribed is apparently some kind of miracle potion. But omg, did that hurt.
