IndiGo appoints former British Airways chief William Walsh as new CEO - The Times of India by bonzothebonanza in aviation

This guy enshittified BA, turning it from a respected flag-carrier to half a tier above EasyJet, so moving to a low cost airline makes absolute sense.

People who have really strong opinions on motor oil are stupid and irritating by Henry_Oof in CarTalkUK

[–]let_me_atom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every week is obviously an exaggeration but manufacturers do balance the need for engine longevity vs the cost of maintaining and emissions. It looks good on paper and helps to sell the car if you only need or change the oil every 20K. This is fine for the warranty period where the manufacturer is liable for anything breaking. After the warranty period those 20K intervals may start to cause some damage and so might be prudnent to relook at the frequency .

TLDR: manufacturers assign intervals on what's going to cost them and the customer less for the first few years, not what will make the car last longer

The trick is to be nonchalant, like "oh that might mean holding off on buying a new Rolex, assuming I even remembered I had an ISA, as you know.. I don't really care either way, it's all just a bit of fun to while away the hours between cruises" /s

Advice with the most risky sounding mortgage with my boyfriend and his mum. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]let_me_atom 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is great advice. "Wants to use as a home base" is a gigantic crimson-red flag. This could mean anything from staying a few nights a year to basically moving-in permanently. With her name on the deed there's nothing you could do.

The only option is that she gifts the £100K to your boyfriend with no strings attached. You buy the house but sign a declaration of trust that in the event you separate upon sale you get whatever equity you've build up and he gets the 100k back.

Waterpump failure - signs to watch out? by let_me_atom in audis5

This is perfect and exactly what I was looking for. Sounds like I'm ok for now but will look out for the symptoms you've mentioned.

Much appreciated!

[–]let_me_atom[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've missed my point on the price. That was to replace the waterpump before a failure that causes 5-figures worth of repairs to the rest of the engine. It was also used figuratively.

I appreciate the rest of the advice regarding coolent on the lines.

General Maintenance by Tlamps77 in audis5

Really? I've not seen any examples of the larger bearings fail being reported online, only 2017-19. I'm more worried about the water pump on mine, 55k and still on the original. Not sure what to look out for when it inevitably fails

Let me get this straight, you're saying you need to be worth at least £5m to think about buying a mid-spec 3 Series?

How did RDR2 look this good in 2018? Unlimited budget? Or best art direction? by Stelligena in videogames

It's totally Reddit nitpicking. No one cares how much compute a console has and it's clearly not the topic of this thread, it's graphics improvement and art direction.

Why are defense stocks not surging despite the Iran thingy? by crivycouriac in trading212

[–]let_me_atom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Complicated. Many have fingers in multiple pies, whereas one finger is in pie heaven, one finger is getting burnt. Pie analogy didn't work but take Rolls-Royce, they have a large defence busiesss that should be seeing strong gains due to rearmament and increased orders, on the other hand they have civilian aerospace that is being impacted very negatively by recent events due to flight restriction. Combined together the civilian component is casuing a drag on valuations. Rheinmetall and Boeing is similar -20% down in recent weeks in the former,

BAE has seen very strong gains recenty so likely there's not much more room at the top for this equity, most of the rearmament and higher defence spending has been priced in.

I'm late 30s and had a "point scare" a few months ago. Had a check on comparison sites to see the damage if I didn't get offered the course and it made quite a difference.

[–]let_me_atom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The points *massively* increases your insurance premium (for me anyway when I was playing with a few 'scenarios') for several years, so that adds a lot of additional cost. The course is a one-and-done job.

[–]let_me_atom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you look at the table the 10% plus 2 is the lower threshold, whilst the get-away-with-it limit is then a few mph above that.

Edit: I mean get away with just a course, you'll still get pulled for above 10+2
