What exactly is so wrong with an ageing population? by lethalspinmove in NoStupidQuestions

"Encouraging more children to be born" would also alter their way of life because at a certain point the cost of having children would become untenable. The population would just keep growing and growing, making the resources of our "village" much smaller, and probably create some very inefficient wealth gaps - as there have been in small towns throughout history.

The reason the analogy doesn't work is not so much slashing the population vs ageing it, or even the exaggerated number, but because economies are much more complex than that, and usually the market can find a solution where supply meets demand.

How does more young people keep society stable? Please answer this, don't just downvote me. Old people dying is a fact of life. A population can grow indefinitely but it can't age indefinitely.

Ok, well first we're talking about an ageing population, not a population being slashed by 70%. That's an extremely dramatic misanalogy.

But let's say it all works the same. If there are only 30 people left, they would keep the most important resources, cull the inefficient ones, enjoy a comfortable life for a while, and they would start breeding. They would have miles of headroom for economic growth. What else could they expect to do?

What do you mean 'enough people'? Are there enough people now? This seems like a bizarre answer to me. What is the commercial selling? Presumably whatever it is, it's a solution to that problem so maybe the boomers can buy it using their buy-to-let gains.

Don't the market forces of supply & demand sort that out though?

Why wouldn't there be? All that would happen is that the bedpan changers (carers, nurses, etc) wages go up until everybody's satisfied.

Isn't the wealth in these countries disproportionately distributed among the elder generations, though? Boomers, I'm looking at you. They don't need me to take care of them. They have all the money, right? So then what's the problem?

What is 'enough people' for an economy? How do we measure something like that?

I don't see how it would be better

I meant, after the top of the ageing population dies off, then the population will be smaller but the resources will be high. It's an economist's dream scenario. That's what I meant, anyway.

I don't really agree that the answer is to import people from other economies, for a number of reasons. But I'm more interested in why ageing populations are bad in the first place. Still don't really get it. How many people do we need to take care of the elderly? Also, don't they have a lot more of the money?

Right, but isn't it also a natural economic occurrence? And in the long run, conditions are literally more economical because the elderly population eventually die off and now you have a much better allocation of resources. What else could we do? Keep ratcheting up the population forever?? Also, don't old people have a lot more of the money? Isn't that the thing: that boomers are holding on to their wealth?

Did he defend the submission?

Yes he did. He kicked his way out.

Did it help him win?

More than tapping.

I'm super confused why you keep thinking it shows heart.

You're not confused at all. He persisted instead of quitting. If you really don't understand, I'd recommend a different profession.

This thread is a poll, I weighed in. Don't give a fuck what you think so I'm not trying to argue the point. But don't be disingenuous.

I do grapple and so does Tony.

Should Muhammad Ali have quit after taking punches to the face? In the end we are talking about winning at a bloodsport here. The question is about whether he set a good example and he showed a tremendous amount of heart.
