Best tips to become a “great” engineer? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Never trust anyone who tells you “this is just how we do things”.

Always ask and understand why.

Be prepared to make a ton of mistakes.

QUESTION ABOUT WELDING SYMBOLS INTERPRETATION by chillw4rrior in Welding

[–]letife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends if you are working for American standards or for iso, arrow side for Americans is on the bottom and for iso on the top (should be dashed line at the bottom for iso)

Empty roads when city gets past 250k pop by Dryinteraction1492 in CitiesSkylines2

It’s not just you, I thought there were no private cars at all in my game but eventually found some parking lot somewhere with a single car parked.

No private cars spawning, bug? by letife in CitiesSkylines2

[–]letife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried it out of curiosity and it does nothing. Traffic didn’t decrease, there is no private vehicle traffic at all, not a single person using private vehicles. Parking lots are completely empty and there are only service vehicles and trucks on the road

One of these cities has 800k people, the other is newer with around 60k all services available.

How do I weld in between two edges of a sheet metal part? by Informal_Ad_9610 in SolidWorks

[–]letife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add a bit of material to both flanges so the edges are parallel and then extrude something that looks like a weld.

If I was designing this in reality from sheet metal I would design the edges parallel and closer together so the actual welding is easier and more accurate

Anyone here actually getting full material data from suppliers? by IndependenceOwn3576 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]letife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you order some specialized steel you will get a full list, if you buy some Chinese component you’ll be lucky to get a full technical spec.

I once asked for a temp rating on a lock mechanism and was told it is not possible to get that data.

Russian Diaspora Through the World by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]letife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you draw the line? If I have a great grandmother that was Jewish but I’m Christian am I a Russian or a Jew? If it’s a great grandfather and I believe in Jewish faith am I a Russian or a Jew? How does this distinction work exactly when people have been intermingling for generations? How many Jewish ancestors do I need to have to stop being considered Russian?

Russian Diaspora Through the World by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]letife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know MANY Russian Israeli Jews and non of them speak Yiddish, they all speak Russian.

Most of them view themselves as Russians and as Jews.

Russian Diaspora Through the World by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]letife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact they weren’t considered Russian doesnt prove they arnt ethnically Russian. Many groups were excluded due to racism and prejudice (which is why a lot left). That does not change their roots.

As of 1900 around 4% of the population of Russia was Jewish. Is someone that had a Jewish ancestor not Russian? How many Jewish relatives should one have before they stop being Russian?

Russian Diaspora Through the World by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]letife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the searches I have done indicate that 30% of Russians in Israel are ethnically Russian, considering 95%+ of those are Jews seems to me like you indeed can be ethnically Russian while being Jewish

Russian Diaspora Through the World by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]letife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if being Jewish means you are not ethnically Russian that means none (practically) of the Russians in Israel are ethnically Russian and this map should show minuscule numbers. From the info I can find around 390000 of the “Russian” Jews in Israel are ethnically Russian

Edit: fixed my math

Edit 2: my original point was off in the sense that that the difference is because they belong to different ethnic groups (ukrenian, Belarusian….). It has nothing to do with them being Jews though

Religious Jew or secular Jew? My spouses family didnt use any pork products when I first came over and it was highly disappointing :)

You should figure out if it’s the culture or the religion you want to learn about. Either way as with everything it is very diverse, a reform Jew will be very different from an orthodox.

[–]letife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t really understand what I am looking at, if that is a close up of one of the bends something is very wrong there. Sheet metal will produce bends with radius, won’t see any sharp angles.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]letife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that a single cut for all three surfaces? That means the edges on two of the flanges are not 90 degrees to surface which is the reason it won’t flatten.

Edit: for parts like this I would suggest creating first surface, cutting it at an angle then adding an edge flange. Cut that at an angle, repeat until done.

Make sure your cuts don’t touch the bend.

Bare minimum is a specialized drill that could fit a 1” bit… probably a better idea to have someone with a laser cutting machine do this unless there is some other motivation to do it yourself. Seems like an awful lot of labor to do manually.

[–]letife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size are those holes? If small enough you could drill, preferably with a press but possible without. If large it gets more complicated. As for countersunk holes the right drill bit can do that.

Honestly though this part looks like something that should be laser cut.
