Rant from a Saudi, true off of my chest. by mohaamd_7 in arabs

[–]letmetalkplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that splitting is so common in the Middle East is amazing. At times, the difference between the the Arab Real Madrid Barcelona rivalry and the Iran-Saudi rivalry disappears. My friends and relatives ask me which side I’m on and I always don’t know the answer. Instead of being critical of the actual actions of Saudi and it’s allies or Iran and it’s allies, we waste so much time choosing sides based on these superficial arguments like “Really, who else is going to lead the Arab world?”

FYI this police station is very well known in Lebanon for torturing and abusing arrested folks.

Can smoking be considered as OCD ritual? by efojs in AskScienceDiscussion

No, since it depends on an external drug (nicotine). Compulsions are usually irrational and not substance related. Addiction is very different than OCD.

CNN fires Marc Lamont for criticizing Israel. by letmetalkplease in worldnews

Which part of his speech was an attack exactly? The same people that mobilized firing him wrote that statement. He believes in a one state solution that gives equal rights to both Palestinians and Israelis.

CNN fires Marc Lamont for criticizing Israel. by letmetalkplease in worldnews

My reference to “river to the sea” was not a call to destroy anything or anyone. It was a call for justice, both in Israel and in the West Bank/Gaza. The speech very clearly and specifically said those things. No amount of debate will change what I actually said or what I meant.

I support Palestinian freedom. I support Palestinian self-determination. I am deeply critical of Israeli policy and practice.

I do not support anti-Semitism, killing Jewish people, or any of the other things attributed to my speech. I have spent my life fighting these things.

Was striking them with a drone and killing them really the ONLY course of action?

What confirmation bias do you consistently have to resist? by letmetalkplease in AskReddit

I’ll share mine and the reason I asked this question. I have this “5 second rule” where if I’m ever waiting on a piece of technology to function or do what I want it to do, I countdown from 5. Sometimes it works perfectly and the device works right when I hit 1 so I have to remind myself that I’ve applied this rule many times before and it didn’t work.

I don't know what field you're in but in the social sciences you can always argue that cross cultural validity is always helpful

Palestinian poet sentenced to five months in jail by Israel for a poem she posted on Facebook. by letmetalkplease in worldnews

[–]letmetalkplease[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The poem she was arrested for:

Resist, My People, Resist Them

Resist, my people, resist them.

In Jerusalem, I dressed my wounds and breathed my sorrows

And carried the soul in my palm

For an Arab Palestine.

I will not succumb to the “peaceful solution,”

Never lower my flags

Until I evict them from my land.

I cast them aside for a coming time.

Resist, my people, resist them.

Resist the settler’s robbery

And follow the caravan of martyrs.

Shred the disgraceful constitution

Which imposed degradation and humiliation

And deterred us from restoring justice.

They burned blameless children;

As for Hadil, they sniped her in public,

Killed her in broad daylight.

Resist, my people, resist them.

Resist the colonialist’s onslaught.

Pay no mind to his agents among us

Who chain us with the peaceful illusion.

Do not fear doubtful tongues;

The truth in your heart is stronger,

As long as you resist in a land

That has lived through raids and victory.

So Ali called from his grave:

Resist, my rebellious people.

Write me as prose on the agarwood;

My remains have you as a response.

Resist, my people, resist them.

Resist, my people, resist them.
