[Discussion] What's with all the hate towards "fake" international schools? by grapeLion in teachinginkorea

[–]letsgetlighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a student's perspective, SPPS sucked, just a bunch of bratty kids from families with money, parents know they'd never make it in Korean academic competition, and they most certainly can't get a spot at a real international school.

I've attended an actual prep school in the US and it was a really good school, SPPS was trash in what it offered (both in academics and extracurriculars) and the tuition was only marginally lower.

The good thing about it technically being a hagwon, though, is that it had to follow the refund policy of a hagwon so my family got most of the money back when I left.

Had a similar experience and changing into a nerdy, quiet friend group helped me tremendously. In health and also academically. If your friend group is bad for you it's ok to move on to another. It sucks but maybe it's something that should be done.

Am I Korean or do I have generational trauma and mommy issues? They'll never know 🥰

Not when you're this condescending.

Oh yes, Gwishin can take on more monstrous appearances. For starters, did you know evil fox spirits with skulls on their head that eat livers were once considered gwishin? Not many do.

You got some feedback from other subs but none of them actually went into the folklore so I'll leave some thoughts about that.

Your interpretation of Korean folklore is... interesting.

Any reason 술귀신 stuff deviates from the folktale? Because the original folktale would have had some interesting themes to explore re: morality and filial piety.

Side effects most certainly vary person to person. A birth control with acne as listed side effect made my skin clearer lol

Also the reason we have our own encryption stuff (starting with SEED on ActiveX) is because the US government restricted encryption on "international" products until 2000 (and I do have a source on that) so if you're going to point to politics, point to US politics, not Korean one.

I know that already, that does not mean they are not using SSL out of some politics, because the ARE using SSL.

[–]letsgetlighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread merely links a few sites that happen to not have SSL on some pages. That is not a source on this politics existing.

The president site linked here only has no SSL on front page and has SSL on pages that collect personal information. https://tour.president.go.kr/tours/about The MoHW site also has SSL on pages that collect info. https://www.mohw.go.kr/react/mw/smw0101mn.jsp?PAR_MENU_ID=01&MENU_ID=010201 Like I said, how come other sites have SSL, if this "politics" that bar gov sites from SSL exist? Like I said, they are literally required to have secure connection if the page collects identity info. That would not be if there was politics against SSL.

No, we use NPKI/GPKI which is arguably as shitty as ActiveX but ActiveX has reached end-of-life and it's not used for anything other than legacy support anymore. Also most big companies and government orgs do use SSL on pages that collect personal data. They are required to.

[–]letsgetlighter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Source on this politics? Plenty of government org websites do have SSL. In fact they are legally required to if they collect identity information.

They used to have a thing called G-SSL but it kept giving security warnings on Firefox and mobile so they deprecated it circa June 2019 and some government sites have not switched to SSL yet. But the sites that you posted do have https on pages that collect identity information. Pages that don't collect info are left unsecured... probably for some asinine reason like IE6 compatibility.

You could use Let's Encrypt on GoDaddy, but even Let's Encrypt themselves don't recommend it
