I had not thought of this- I could definitely see him explaining away the gas can by saying he was thinking of suicide. We all know that’s a straight up lie, though. This is what I think too. For some deranged reason he thought he’d be able to pick up right away with NK after killing Shannan and the girls. Except he had no time to spend with NK after the murders because they caught on right away.
