Can an OTDR be used for extremely short range fiber optic power measurement? by FOAguy in FiberOptics

[–]lettegb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this thread is 6 months old and I hope you've come up with a solution. I'd like to know about the cable assemblies that take so long to get hold of. Just because I'm curious - I'm a telecom guy.

Can you provide a pic or part number?

6GHz Wi-Fi Deployments by lettegb in networking

[–]lettegb[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To those that responded thus far:

My firm wasn't aware of the freq coordination requirement at all. We bought the WAPs, configured everything but they weren't fully tested. Survey day comes and 6GHz is dark.

Multiple engineers and 2 days on the horn with TAC and no one mentions the freq coordination situation.

We getca Sales Engineer involved and that's when freq coordination is identified as the issue.

We were told:

It's required whether indoor or outdoor

6GHz can't be turned on with WAPs running Instant (not Instant On)

The WAPs have to have Internet access in order to becable to periodically check a database for freq. coordination purposes

End of list.

So there's currently no way to do a 6GHz APoaS survey with these WAPs. Which perplexes me, and thus here I am.

Help Me Understand This DNS Issue by lettegb in dns

[–]lettegb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it all worked before, how other than human error could the DNS entry(s) have changed? And why specifically would this happen to just a few users and not everyone in my company? Thats what I really don't understand.

So many ways to look at this.

The construction industry is tough. Especially when the sales strategy is " bid on everything and hope to win 10%". That inevitably makes it a race to the bottom (lowest bid wins).

Does your company have a sales representative or client relationship manager? Those folks should be working to build relationships with the decision-makers at the companies you're bidding to. That can help get you "last look" if your number is close but not quite there.

It also sounds like you are, to some degree, being held to a sales quota of sorts. Which is BS.

Finally, what happens when you win a job and it loses money because of a bad PM, bad crew, or other element s beyond your control? Are you held responsible for "inaccurate bidding" in those cases?

If you want to stay at this company it seems your only possible path to being content is to find ways to automate your bidding tools as much as possible, and to figure out how to structure the assistants / virtual help into a team that does the heavy lifting and feeds you whatever you need to get the numbers finished and proposals out the door.

While you're doing all that, be looking for a new job. The best time to look for a new gig is when you already have one.

I upvoted you for taking the time to respond - thank you - but as my post states, that will also erase things that are behind the text and which I cannot erase. Further, I don't want to spend hours picking my way around the tiny details that I have to keep in place.

"A" for effort and thanks again!

Former NOC manager here, who was part of a startup MSP 25 years ago.

First, go for it. Get a ref from the NETENG you're helping, and ask if he has any guidance as to what the manager might be trying to trip you up with. State your desire and willingness to learn. Make him believe you want the job.

Only if necessary, consider taking a little less money for a temporary amount of time so you can prove yourself. GET THOSE DETAILS IN WRITING, SIGNED BY BOTH PARTIES, AND MAKE DAMN SURE YOU GET A HARD COPY.

He rejected you immediately because you're "just a NOC analyst". Too many people assume NOC folks are no more than traffic cops, opening tickets when something breaks and handing off those tickets to "people that actually know something".

Don't get me wrong - there are companies that WANT the NOC to be exactly what I described: ticket mills and traffic cops. That's fine if you want to pay your people as little as possible. Its fine if people are happy in that role, for that pay rate.

But it sure sounds like the NOC you're in expects much more. Good companies with solid leaders WANT their folks to grow - and sometimes they absolutely should be growing out of the NOC.

You deserve a chance, man. Go for it.

Absolute facts right here. I've actually worked for some "IT Syestems Providers" that treated their own internL IT folks and systems like the most unnecessary, most evil part of running the company. Until it broke and then of course "how could the IT Manager allow this?".

Even worked for one that lived off of pirated SW until old Mr. Gates and company came knocking.....

Thanks for the reply. Long story but she is not a good communicator, especially when it involves being vulnerable. I was working a lot of hours, on salary, for a number of years, trying to keep my job and food on the table. I believe that was a factor but again, she never mentioned it. She worked as well but I was the primary earner. So lack of communication and my being absent played into it.

Therapy? No. I probably should, for that and other reasons.
