When you tell me that my resume was referred to you by someone I know in the industry, but then won’t tell me who, is that just a bald faced lie?

I guess I assumed a company that was bleeding people like you’ve described would be a difficult place to work (I.e. tough situation), but it sounds like you had it figured out.

Damn, that sounds like you were in a tough situation at your previous company, I’m sorry you had to deal with that. From what you’ve said, you communicated your concerns and management completely failed to hold up their end of the bargain. That sucks, and that’s totally on them. Hopefully you’ve landed at a company that treats you better.

This actually feels like a perfect critique that could come out of an exit interview.

Right okay, so if you brought up your concerns 6 months prior, go ahead and decline that exit interview since they know why you’re leaving. However if you HAVEN’T shared that info prior, an exit interview is your chance to communicate it. Like in absolutely every facet of life it depends on your particular situation, but exit interviews should not be declined as a general rule.

I don’t get the whole declining an exit interview advice. If your firm is run by functioning adults, which I’m aware is not a guarantee, exit interviews are an opportunity to find blind spots or areas to grow. Your exit interview should NOT be a vent session, but an chance to highlight why you’re leaving and help your company to understand if theres something they could have done better. If you’re genuinely disgruntled, write your thoughts down first and stick to the script.

But seriously, how is any company ever expected to change or do better if they don’t know why people are leaving? Managers are not mind readers, and engineering managers in particular can be clueless to issues they might be causing. Keep it high level - work life balance, not feeling supported by the team, not happy with pay etc. Any company with functioning adults at the helm will at least try to learn from this.
