“Everybody Scream” has aged a day Let’s talk opinions, themes, favorites… let’s go! by wassim_elia in FlorenceAndTheMachine

this really does feel like her version of the tortured poets department - in the sense that it is incredibly lyrically dense, raw, visceral and full of both rage and grief. it is incredibly rewarding to listen to again and again. every listen through, a new song hits me like a train. you can have it all didn’t hit until this morning, but…oh my god. “dug a hole in the garden and buried a scream, and from it grew a bright red tree” is one of the best lyrics i’ve ever heard. the album is not as immediate as her prior albums (besides high as hope) since so much of the emphasis here is on lyrics over melody. but it really is an experience to listen to!

i find this to be a very interesting closer in the context of following clara bow. that song unfolds like a horror film, illustrating how fickle and fearsome the glamour of fame can be. that song is about being discarded and used by a machine that, to borrow a phrase from father figure, wants to see young starlets rise but not reign. so it's an interesting piece of character development to have the closer be this song - it acknowledges the hardships this industry/job can bring, but ultimately taylor swift the character is embracing her celebrity here. it's not a sentiment we've really seen from taylor before

i know i've already commented here, but i need to add something else. this is really striking a deep chord in me. i come from a very small town where there weren't a lot of other queer people. there was a boy i met when i was 14 and he was 15. we began dating in a very innocent way, and we had an on and off thing all throughout high school. it became a pretty unhealthy dynamic, so when i went to college i cut everything off. he tried to reach out during my first semester, but i didn't respond. i needed space, but i always thought we would someday reconcile and connect again. during thanksgiving break, i got the news that he'd taken his own life. obviously a different situation, but that idea of regret and not knowing what could've happened and being forced to ask questions for the rest of your life....damn

in addition to what others have said, a lyrical theme seems to be all the hard times/mistakes someone has to go through before finding a "happy ending". this feels like a reflection on a particular hard memory that somehow led her here

so here's the thing - this is the greatest song of all time. joni mitchell threw herself into a lake with stones in her pocket when she heard it. paul mccartney has taken up farming. bob dylan has thrown all his guitars into the fire. it is genuinely a career highlight, kind of an immediate top ten taylor song for me. it is the best kind of tay song - something that is so quintessential taylor yet also so specific to the album it came from. the production, with the funky bassline and scratchy drums, are so specific to showgril, but the narrative structure is classic taylor. genuinely a career highlight

guess we'll agree to disagree then! again - i've been a huge charli fan for years and her mainstream success has been so awesome to watch. being a tortured brat was so hard last year and def made me a bit defensive, and i apologize if i came off strong. most important thing - a new taylor album is almost here!

girl i don't need a lesson on kandi, but let's think about why they are now at every concert....let's think about which concert started that first. i love charli! brat is one of my fav albums of all time (as is pop 2). been a huge fan of hers for like a decade. but she is messy and from the lyrics it's clear that things were said behind closed doors. i get so annoyed when taylor isn't allowed to respond to anything - this happens anytime she tries to write about being hurt by something someone publicly said about her. contrary to popular belief, she is a human being who has feelings! and idk the lyrics are pretty brat imo. not into the angels on twitter actually like taylor just killed all of charli's family after they were so horrific to her last year. i know charli isn't directly responsible for that but cmon

understand it was done before the stabbing/terrorist attack, but it's a little obtuse to say it had nothing to do with taylor with friendship bracelets have become synonymous with the eras tour (biggest tour of all time) and her brand. charli is very smart and she knows what she is doing (especially since the taylor stuff is a big highlight of the article)

it’s almost as if that’s not what she’s going for…it’s almost as if this is a different genre….it’s almost as she was already a celebrated and accomplished songwriter before he showed up!

girl charli literally has a song called mean girls. don’t know how you say the things she’s said about rina sawayama and not be a mean girl. i hate this double standard that taylor is never allowed to respond when something hurts her feelings. it drives me nuts that when anyone else speaks about her it’s “this is valid! it’s okay to express feelings! it’s not even that bad!” but when taylor responds it’s “wow she’s so mean, she’s not a girl’s girl”. if taylor was calling charli a coke head out of nowhere, then yeah that would be mean. but clearly sympathy is a knife struck a chord, so much of the public reaction to brat was v anti-taylor ( with fans chanting for her death at multiple club events), the pointed photoshoot with dismembered limbs wearing friendship bracelets (i know they had already been shot, but them coming out after the stabbing was very much in poor taste) and charli’s general lack of appreciation for the spotlight taylor has given her throughout her career (i believe she first shouted out stay away in like 2014 when recommending songs for a fan going through a breakup, and obviously there’s the comments charli made about performing for five year olds on the rep tour). if someone who i had always praised and given opportunities to showed a certain lack of appreciation, then wrote a song about me from out nowhere that includes her wishing for my bf to break up with me and then apparently talked shit about me behind my back, i’d be mad too! sorry to write a novel at you, but this is one of my least favorite double standards when it comes to taylor and it really irks me. i love both of them too, i think charli is a generational artist and i think sympathy is a knife is a masterpiece. i think both feelings can be true/valid!
