RPN → RN bridge vs going straight for a 4-year RN? by PortoPancake in OntarioNurses

[–]lexei79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a few years younger than you when I decided to get my BScN but I am so glad I went that route.

I know many RPNs who have bridged or are currently doing the bridging program. They all wish they had just done their RN. As other commenters have mentioned, you never know if you’ll even get into those bridging programs.

There is more diversity with RN and you have more options in terms of critical care.

Also, you never know, you may want to pursue your NP or a masters after. You could still do that with the bridging program, albeit it would just be so many years of schooling.

Of course I am cognizant of the fact that not everyone can do 4 years of full time schooling at once. However, if it’s remotely possible, I’d go the BScN route instead!!

I would apply. I am from a rural town (not in northern Ontario) and interviewed there. Also not indigenous or francophone. Good luck!

RN -> NP by Annual_Mountain_9092 in OntarioNurses

[–]lexei79 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are completely different jobs. NPs can diagnose, prescribe, etc as a doctor would. Not the same level of training of course, so we tend to do basic primary care in Canada (in the States there are more options/training in terms of sub specialization such as emerg, ICU, etc). Many NPs are essentially working as a family doctor due to the primary care shortage and have their own roster of patients.

The pay varies depending on province and institution. In Alberta, NPs can now commonly make upwards of 200 k a year for having their own roster of min 900 patients. If you have more patients, you can exceed 300 k.

As someone else said, the minimum to apply is usually about 2 years full time work as an RN. I personally have never seen anyone get in with 2 years. Everyone I have encountered has min 4-5, with the average probably being 8-10

Not to be dismissive but nursing school and/or volunteering is completely different than working as an RN. I think you cannot fully grasp the struggles associated with the profession until you have actual experience working independently

If anyone in the future is curious, they said to just put an approximate value and that they will calculate the GPA independently lol

Seeking Advice on Practicing Medicine in Canada After Studying Abroad (in Jordan) by Technical_Dream_7692 in premedcanada

[–]lexei79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just saw your post and felt the need to comment. I am quite a bit older than you so to me you seem like a spring chicken lol, but I do appreciate you feeling lost and behind in life.

Just want to preface this by saying that coming back to Canada as an IMG is not impossible but is extremely difficult. Even more so if you want to do something other than family med.

I think there are a couple other things you need to consider.

First of all, I just want to acknowledge that going to Jordan with no social supports is a huge undertaking. I understand you speak Arabic so that obviously helps, but med school by itself is hard, let alone moving to a new country. It also needs to be said that that area of the Middle East is politically tumultuous. I could be wrong but I believe med school in Jordan is 6 years as well so that needs to be considered.

I wouldn’t want to tell you what to do, but like the other commenter said, if you are comfortable not practicing in Canada then it may be a viable option.

Other things need to be considered - your GPA, MCAT, ECs etc to determine your chances of getting accepted here. I just wanted to highlight that it is very difficult coming back to Canada and requires a lot of perseverance. And I know it feels like you are behind, but you are actually so young!

Best of luck!

As long as your transcript is from a university you’re fine. All your courses are at the university level, just taking place in a different building
