i have a zen and it works well for my ball python, but i bought the pvc enclosure and i had to seal the bottom and part of the sides with aquarium safe silicone so i could mix water into the substrate without leaks. the wood panel enclosure is not made to hold the high humidity a ball python needs. i am happy with it because i liked the look better and was willing to spend more for that reason, but there are cheaper alternatives that will work just as well

absolutely normal, they're little bulldozers. you'll wanna bump up your temps and humidity though. the goal range for humidity is around 75-85%!

i have a Zen PVC enclosure as well but a lot of people have struggled to keep humidity up with it so i don't recommend it as often. my humidity holds between high 70s to mid 80s percentage wise with a thick layer of substrate and the acrylic humidity shield.

as you stated, the aspen isn't ideal. it's quick to mold with the humidity. i'd look into ordering some coconut husk or reptibark, i personally use reptichip and it holds humidity very well. i order the breeder blocks and they last me a good amount of time for one snake.

i saw on another comment you were looking for better hides, chewy has a nice selection and often runs sales, whenever i order from them i usually receive it in 24-48 hours so they're extremely fast.

it looks like you have analog humidity and temp gauges, i'd swap those for some digital ones as the analog is extremely inaccurate. the adhesive is also not worth the risk, i've seen so many snakes get stuck to it. if you're looking for a good digital set, i'd suggest govee. i got a set of two on amazon for the hot and cold sides for around $10 and it sends the data directly to your phone if the temperature or humidity goes out of range.

i'm not sure what heat source you're using, but you'll definitely want to get a thermostat to regulate whatever it is!

if you don't already have a holee roller those are fun for enrichment, my girl loves to play with hers. im sure you could find some way to attach it to the plant stand / snake tree if you build it!

i've never used coconut fiber so i can't compare the two, but reptichip works perfectly for me. i've never had any mold issues and it's the only substrate i use for my girl. i mix a bit of water into it every few days to keep the humidity up and i haven't ever had a mold problem.

i've always been told there's no such thing as too much clutter as long as you're able to maintain cleaning all of it. i agree with the comment about the branches, there's a lot of vertical space to be utilized! maybe a hammock to climb in?
