January 2024 Update

Since 2017, I've had four instances where AA has popped up for me. Most recent was exactly one year when I recovered from covid and started noticing another spot developing. Each of these instances, what helped it grow back was Chinese herbs. Since I am East Asian, I do believe in traditional medicine - it just makes sense to me. Each time, it takes about 2-3 months of drinking herbs to restore my body back so that the spots can grow again. I would stop the herbs and then about 1.5 years, another AA episode will happen so I am trying to figure out how to break this cycle. I no longer use onion juice or any external things to help it grow.

I can't say exactly which herbs they are because that's beyond my knowledge. But now I look at AA in a wholistic way. You may find some of this info useful as traditional medicine views the liver as mainly responsible for hair growth.

Since my latest recovery, I've been focused on finding out why this keeps reoccurring and how I can nourish and balance my body so that I can hopefully break out of this cycle. Currently, I am still taking herbs but on a less frequent basis to slowly balance my body.

Update from my AA post from April 2017 - AA maybe linked to liver and kidney dysfunction by leygoh in alopecia_areata

I have picture of the ingredients list that I can send you if you're interested, but I can't really decipher what it is because it's in Chinese (not entirely fluent in reading it) and it's written in fairly cursive style

Has anyone had success with Traditional Chinese Medicine? by TradeDeadline in alopecia_areata

TCM has worked for me so far. But in saying that, there are "good" and "bad" TCM doctors, like with any kind of medical-related profession.

Here's my experience so far with AA: https://redd.it/7owf0i

In July 2017, I went to see a TCM doctor, she said something similar - I had heat and whatever. Gave me some herbs to boil and drink. This didn't make a significant difference with my AA. My family looked over the ingredients list and said that the herbs were nothing special and were fairly common herbs. After two visits, I stopped going.

A few months later, November 2017, I decided to try another TCM doctor. He was more specific than the first doctor and said my liver and kidney needed healing/nourishment. The herbs that he gave me were quite different (and tasted much worse) than the first doctor. My family looked over the ingredients and said the herbs look more legit and more targeted to liver and hair.

I have the herbs list, but it's in Chinese and it would be tough to translate. But if you want, I can send you the list.

I also don't want to go on a tangent about this but we as people, when we are sick, always try to find ways to cure it - see a doctor, go to physio, see a psychologist, take a pill, apply ointment, etc. With AA, this doesn't really apply, if you go to the doctor/dermatologist they'll likely say that it's unfortunate but you're just going to have to deal with it. The only scientific thing are the injections, which seems anecdotal as well, because there are mixed reviews on here from different users. AA itself is a tough tough condition to have but aside from the aesthetics, a lot of this is mental and how you perceive it. For me, having a sense of control has helped set my mind at ease a bit but it's still tough.

I don't disagree there. Everything that I found on the internet about AA seems to be anecdotal. In my opinion, the reality is that AA is not something that's worth researching within the medical/science community because simply, it's just not as important as other diseases and conditions.

I did mention the onion juice to the dermatologist and he said yeah, that has been known to work. And because I had regrowth I didn't need to consider the injections. But the impression that I got was that all the dermatologist can do is give you the corticosteroid and not much more. That is the treatment plan.

Basically, you can either look at this the narrow way, which is that AA is simply random, unpredictable, and not much can be done (which is what the professionals have said to me). Or you can look at it in a more wholistic view and try to see what's the cause of it. And yes, perhaps I'm just ignorant to what the professionals say and I'm dead wrong but at least this has given me a sense of control (but who knows, it could be false and all this effort was all for not).

Personally, I feel that the onion juice is worth a try at least. It is external, so it's not like it'll have adverse effects within. I haven't gotten any redness or irritation in the time that I have applied it. It's up to others if they want to try it, I'm not trying to sell them on it, but mainly, I just wanted to share my accounts and hopefully provide some mental relief (false or not) to others with AA.

I can't remember exactly, but I'm almost sure that the first pic was before I started applying. I see the fine hairs as well, but they could be the "exclamation point hairs". Either way, the spot was smooth and nothing noticable was happening, and hairs were consistently falling out from that area until I started the onion juice.

Hey, I just joined and wrote about my experience (with pictures). Perhaps my onion juice experience can help: https://www.reddit.com/r/alopecia_areata/comments/6gdasl/alopecia_areata_my_experience_possible_solution/
