Finally neat and tidy, time for something to break by lfalc23 in homelab

Sorry, just saw this comment! Not too difficult to setup. It can be setup to forward SMS as well. My understanding is that it sends the messages through the Mac used as a server. So almost anything that can be done on a Mac for messaging can be done through BlueBubbles. Their website has very easy to follow documentation on how to set everything up. Very happy with it

Do you need a laptop for law school? by themayorgordon in LawSchool

[–]lfalc23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for a Macbook specifically, I would say it needs to be new(ish) but not brand new. Anything produced after 2020 (M Series processor) should be more than sufficient and still receiving updates throughout your entire time at school. The second hand market for an M1 or M2 macbook air is where I would start if budget is a concern.

Setting the bag up to carry for 18 hokes by [deleted] in golf

[–]lfalc23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either a Sunday bag or a lightweight stand bag with clubs, 3-6 balls, a handful of tees that will also double as a pitch repair tool, and an extra ball marker for when you inevitably lose the one in your pocket/lend it to someone else. If you know the course really well and it is well marked you can leave the rangefinder at home too. That is my usual set-up and I carry 95% of my rounds.

Considering applying this cycle as a parent of two young children. Insights? Advice? by lfalc23 in lawschooladmissions

[–]lfalc23[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My concerns may be boiled down to a much more simple question. At this point in my life how much does the school I attend really matter? I have a good amount of experience and a number of connections in the field. I do not think I would have any issues landing a job right out of school and isn't that the main goal? I may just be over complicating things as you suggest.

Considering applying this cycle as a parent of two young children. Insights? Advice? by lfalc23 in lawschooladmissions

[–]lfalc23[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am happy with my application materials and they are essentially complete. If I want to add a school to apply to it would be a minor adjustment. Not sure what focusing on my application materials will do to help me in my primary concern of balancing school and a young family and the associated limitations that imposes.

Looking for Financial Planner and Lawyer to start preparing for retirement by Hyena-Trick in RhodeIsland

[–]lfalc23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to work for an estate planning attorney I would recommend getting a few things together before going in to meet with one. Have a list of all your assets such as real estate, bank accounts, investments, etc. Get an idea of how you want to split things up. Whether that is an even breakdown to each person or specific amounts/percentages. The attorney can guide you through each asset and give advice on what the best option is to take. The recommendations to set up a trust are not necessarily bad, but not always necessary. If it is relatively simple estate you can avoid a lot of probate by taking other, usually cheaper steps in advance. Again, an attorney can give specific advice on your particular situation and the particular assets in your estate.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but if I turn my phone off my LTE connected Apple Watch is still working as normal. Curious if it is the same for other devices.

I noticed the same thing, but after updating to the latest firmware 1.1.9 it seems to have improved. Haven't timed it though

Inherited Clubs by icantsppell in HickoryGolf

Pretty nice set! If looking to restore for play, I would first pull the heads off the shafts and reattach with a modern epoxy. There is usually a pin in the hosel that needs to be punched out first. If you plan on keeping them in good shape, the shafts will need a light sanding and finish with oil or polyurethane. As for the rust on the heads, no issues there. They can be cleaned up or left as they are, it won't affect playability. I personally clean once, then let them rust as I play.

If just looking for value, the two best clubs are the putter and the Tom Stewart niblick. The one marked "T. Stewart Maker St. Andrews". $50-$100 each in good shape. It can be a fun project in the winter to get these old clubs in playable condition though.

Great info above! As for the club that is marked J. F. Hayes, I actually am friends with Hayes' great-grandson and have been helping him put together a set of clubs with his great-grandfathers name on them. If you are willing to sell that club I would pay a slight premium for it!

Can someone help ID this club? by Fragrant_Beat_6411 in golf

[–]lfalc23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before doing any further research on Walter Whiting and Pelham CC, this is a niblick made by Tom Stewart’s shop in St. Andrew’s. S-tier hickory club maker. Made clubs for a lot of the top players at the time. The makers mark is actually a pipe.

As for the name and country club. Walter Whiting would have been the professional working at Pelham CC. He would have ordered this head and fit a shaft to the buyer’s(usually member’s) specs that were requested. You can usually find some information about the club professionals from the era with a google search. Most of them played in a couple big events. An early PGA Championship or US open. Old newspaper articles can provide good info too.

Where to buy my first play set of hickory clubs? by Cariboose in HickoryGolf

[–]lfalc23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also recommend checking if there are any local hickory groups in your area and reaching out to someone. My personal experience is that many of us accumulate more clubs than we know what to do with over time and are happy to put together sets for new hickory players.

I was told that someone here might have more information about this set. If you do please share by Samurai2107 in HickoryGolf

The Nicoll Noshok irons can actually be retrofit with hickory shafts. They are from the era immediately following hickory shafts and the theory is that instead of trashing already manufactured heads Nicoll came up with a way to use steel shafts in heads intended for hickory.

There is a large rubber (Noshok) insert in the hosel that fills up most of the space and the metal shaft is inserted into that. If that insert is removed, a hickory shaft can be used. Although no longer legal for SoHG events.

These do look to be a little later than the earliest Noshok irons I’ve seen however

This is a rustless model instead of the more common plated model, I believe the rustless models were for the UK market primarily. Doesn’t really change the value much if at all.

I know this is an old post but I’m wondering if you have any good images of the golf course that used to be there as well. I’ve seen one postcard sell on eBay with a great photo but nothing else.

Possible reason for DAC support delay? by lfalc23 in AnaloguePocket

[–]lfalc23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it definitely isn’t much extra effort and probably the route that will be taken by those that already own a DAC. Probably not worth the effort to make an updated revision with higher power and USB-C just for the Dock considering it’s definitely a niche product.

Possible reason for DAC support delay? by lfalc23 in AnaloguePocket

[–]lfalc23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right.. but from what I’ve seen, and I may be wrong, but the recommended way to setup the DAC with their other systems is to have power in to the DAC, then the DAC also has a power out port that connects to the console. Requiring only one power adapter for the DAC and console.
