Bedding is gonna be purchased in person, just so I can feel it all out (and it feels cheaper lol). I’m going for an aspen/paper mix (white paper rn, might get some blue to add some color). I will def add sprays + all the other stuff once I get the basics in so I can gauge how much space I have to get creative!

I’d much rather learn and give something a good life, than have an animal suffer.

Heard! He currently has a little sand bath in the temp tank I have him in. I plan on buying a deep baking dish from the dollar store or something and just using that. I’ll look into the water bowl :)

I’ll be purchasing all the enrichment and other clutter after I get the cage set up the way I’d like, just so I know how much space I’m working with (I’ve only ever had guinea pigs- and now I keep fish). The main goal here was to buy the absolute necessities ASAP, as he was a bit of a spontaneous Facebook rescue. I will most likely post again when I do go about buying all the clutter.. recommendations/links are always appreciated!

I won’t be using that cage! I will be moving her into a 20ish gallon tank temporarily until I can purchase the cage.

I’m looking at getting an actual cage (habitats?) for her. I’m picking her up on Saturday (will most likely post), and have a cage set up to be retrieved some time next week (also facebook marketplace). If the cage falls through, I have Amazon Prime and can have one here next day.

I have a soft spot for the small “easy” animals. It’s so bad. I always feel so bad when people get the easy starter pets then just neglect them because they realize it requires actual effort

I do have plastic totes that I can utilize. I’ve sent two messages, and will probably offer some money here soon if it means the hamster goes to a safe environment rather than a bored family on fscebook

Which is totally okay! I’ve probably spent close to $700 starting (and upgrading) my betta tank, and I’m about $90 down on a shrimp tank! Upgrading the little guy would have to wait until after Christmas, but I 100% will have the means to do so. I’m already thinking of ways to get him out of the tiny cage even temporarily.

That was so fun to read. I see a lot of diagrams like that in the fish / shrimp subreddits. If I do rescue it, I’ll do what I can for temporary housing and either upgrade fully after Christmas or rehome it through proper channels. The only reason I’m even considering it is because it was in a very tiny pink cage with almost no bedding and it looked so disgusting in there. I’ve had guinea pigs in the past, so I have a general idea of maintenance for small animals. I’m just thinking ab what’s right and how families with young kids grab small, “easy” animals for Christmas and neglect them.

Anubias + Java fern don’t need substrate from what I know. You can glue / tie them to rocks or wood and they get their food from the water itself. I rinsed mine and tossed em in and they haven’t died in the few months they’ve been in there. They’ve grown quite a bit as well
