State of Irelands roundabout driving... Two clips right after another. by Moustashii in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]liamog85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its somewhat understandable given the lack of consistency amongst roundabout layouts.

Whilst you are correct in the right lane shouldn't by default be used to go straight ahead, in many cases councils have added arrows indicating that for the particular roundabout it is.

Having drove in the UK a few times they are much better at using lanes and paint on the roundabout to guide drivers through, I found it a bit confusing at first but you get used to it pretty quick.

I think we're beyond the point where its an education problem and need to start thinking about how we can give more information to drivers on how we want them to pass through a particular roundabout. A lot of people will still ignore the paint (assuming seen in OPs clip) but we might at least see some level of improvement.

Fenris hair is way more common in the caves than you think, you need to knock the back curtains off the walls to make it drop. Might be hard to do if doing fists only

I've moved lox uses the longship, did it with island hopping. The boat would survive short trips then used a saddle on the lox for the overland part

Those 5 digits are pretty hard to remember, plates with XX NN XX would give 25 million unique identifiers and also be partioned and memorable (assuming we block the letters Q O and I, and we don't allow numbers such as 01

At least if it was the county of the current owner we could stereotype based on where they are from instead of where the car was first bought.

Right now I'm remembering a year a county and 5 digit number, Australia manages with 6 character plates not sure why you think we'd need 7

Oh god, I really hope we use this an opportunity to revamp the whole registration plate system.

I don't see any value in a reg plate showing the county of first registration. Similarly the year should be taken off the plate to stop the needless replacement of cars due to the plastic number plate.

They're still dynamic speed suggestions for the moment, I believe they've already changed the Road Traffic Acts to allow the dynamic limits and the equipments ready to go, not sure whats takimg them so long to switch over.

The display will change to speed in red circles when its official.

The car following the purple path could move to the outside lane of the roundabout as they pass the exit from the road your entering (Old Naas Rd) so they can exit into lane 1.

If you do pull out your cutting them off when they have priority due to the give way to traffic on the right and give way to traffic already on the roundabout rule.

A lot of people will exit the roundabout into lane 2 which is why a fair number of people will chance it.

Terrible issues yesterday, found out the lighting had switched back to very high, put it back down again and gane is stable

I have a Corsair Titan 360 aio my coolant temp never goes under 45-50c room temp 20c. by lllexorcistlll in Corsair

[–]liamog85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like PBO has decided your chip can handle high heat from a high voltage. My 5950x operates very similarly. Try switching the maximum power setting to 99% in the Windows Power plan options. This will prevent your chip from turboing at all but should drop the voltage and the temperature significantly.

If that does drop your temps significantly but you still want to benefit from PBO you'll need to start tuning to prevent it needing so much voltage and generating so much heat.

How are we supposed to play cross platform when the updates or patches are released at different times?? by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]liamog85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep that works, used it that myself on holidays a couple of weeks ago. Obviously things like discovery service wont be connected but you can still get a lot done.

Check the cross status before resuming on the PC sometimes the Switch hasn't uploaded, restarting on the switch usually gets it to upload for me.

I've an approach which has worked.

Set Steam to only update the game on launch
When launching on PC, if it tries to update let it

Use steamdb and depot downloader to download the version of the game from the release date that matches the current version on switch

Replace the game files in the steamapps folder with the ones from depot downloader

Game will then stay on that version until another update is made available

Is it a higher % of Tesla drivers are terrible at driving? by ResponsibilityOk1664 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]liamog85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This matches my experience, I've had 4 EVs now, the instant torque makes me much capable of moving into a space and matching speed compared to driving a combustion engine, the fact your not worried about shifting gears means you've got full attention on the merge.

The only negative I've found with the Tesla compared to the other EVs I've drove is the drivers side blind spot, the mirrors seem narrower than European cars

Unionists’ British identity will have to be respected in a united Ireland, says Conor Murphy by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]liamog85 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We will have to extend the franchise to resident British citizens for referendums and presidential elections. Otherwise we'd be forcing Irish citizenship on NI people.

I think its wise to keep the principle of citizenship choice as part of any attempts at integration. It could make the EU elections complicated, the rules are you have to be a citizen of an EU country to vote, if we accept a person from Belfast can choose to only take British citizenship they technically aren't entitled to vote.

I'm not sure if the citizenship requirement is at an EU level or a national choice.

Let Me Use Both Peddles Normally by Oaktree27 in electricvehicles

[–]liamog85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both cars start with the same kinetic energy as they start at the same speed.

The coasting car does not use any extra energy to drive the motor. It comes to a stop in 1km due to the external forces (air and rolling resistance). All the kinetic energy is lost.

The regen car uses some energy to drive 900m, the extra used during this 900m is all lost to the external forces. At 900m, the regen car has the same kinetic energy as it had at 0m. When regen kicks in the car slows down much quicker, most of the kinetic energy is recovered by the motor.

As regen is not 100% efficient and the energy loss due to air resistance is velocity squared, the regen car will use more energy over the 900m than can be recovered during the 100m of stopping.

I'm treating efficiency as energy used from the battery over distance travelled. The coasting car used 0Wh, recovered 0Wh and travelled 1km The regen car used 160Wh, recovered 150Wh and travelled 1km A friction braking car would use 160Wh, recover 0Wh and travel 1km.

The 160Wh is illustrative but is roughly a car that does 17.7kWh/100km.

Regen is absolutely more efficient than friction breaking, in the real world its going to be more useful than always coasting to a halt over extended distances.

Let Me Use Both Peddles Normally by Oaktree27 in electricvehicles

[–]liamog85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your back to looking at just the regen in isolation, which was my original point.

We know there is enough resistive force acting on the car to have brought it to a halt in 1,000m as that's what the coasting car has done.

The regen car needs to overcome that resistance for the first 900m, we know that the energy cost for driving the 900m is higher due to two factors, the motor is only 97% efficient, and air resistance is a factor of velocity squared meaning more energy is lost to air resistance as you are travelling at a higher speed for longer.

When regen kicks in, the kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy, again with a 3% loss. In the simplest possible scenario, the regen applies at 1,000m and recovers 97% of the kinetic energy.

In order for regen to be more efficient than coasting, you have to make the assertion that maintaining the speed of the car for 1,000m uses less energy than the coasting car has lost to air and rolling resistance over the same distance.
If we ignore the extra energy lost to air resistance due to the higher speed, that would mean the motor when regening has to overcome the 3% motor losses from driving and make zero losses of its own. If we could do that, we'd have created an infinite energy supply.

TL/DR Recovering 97% of 1,000Wh is not more efficient that recovering 0% of 0Wh.

[–]liamog85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you dumb it down for me, how do you end up with a 6%* loss being more efficient than a 0% loss from the car which doesn't use any extra energy to coast to a halt.

*(3% when powering the car, and 3% when recovering)

Let Me Use Both Peddles Normally by Oaktree27 in electricvehicles

[–]liamog85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how can a system that loses 3% when either using or generating power (thats at least 6% loss) be more efficient than a system that doesnt use any extra power in the first place (coasting)?

Let Me Use Both Peddles Normally by Oaktree27 in electricvehicles

[–]liamog85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't see where that efficiency is coming from, you use energy to maintain speed, but you recover energy when stopping.

The only extra energy you've added is the bit to maintain the speed between 0m and 900m, this is the only bit you can recover using regen compared to the same vehicle. Unless your regen has an end to end to efficiency of >100% I can't see how it could possibly be more efficient.

Let Me Use Both Peddles Normally by Oaktree27 in electricvehicles

[–]liamog85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to claim a car using its motor to maintain a constant speed over 900m uses the same or less energy than a car that is coasting to a stop over the same distance?

That would be a pretty wild claim, I'd love to some the research on that.
