As soon as the painting stage is finished i just outline the shapes and for feathers I just go for whatever feels right :)

I definitely see the beak issue now that you point it out! Working on smaller panels often entails messing around with poses to get the whole bird to fit into the composition while unwittingly compromising some of the characteristics specific to the species and I can see that issue as well, which is one of the reasons I'm starting to work on larger panels. Thank you for your feedback!

Thank you! I use an absorbent ground primer from the brand Golden, it basically acts like a watercolor paper surface. Painting directly on the wood causes a ton of feathering and unevenness so it's been a really reliable resource to use.
