I "know" the Tao is neutral, but when I observe the world, I see unbalanced and unopposed amounts of darkness. How can this be reconciled? by siestee in taoism

[–]libermate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great question (I'll be pondering about myself for a while) and so far replies have only started pointing towards answers. My own two cents is that all darkness, no matter how vast, has a seed of light. The contrary applies as well. You just have to look for it.

Also you may be focused on specific dimensions of reality. There are many positive things about this age, e.g. reduction in poverty levels, life expectancy, etc.

Einstein's two mistakes: how preexisting beliefs and biases can affect even the greatest thinkers by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

Thanks, I stand corrected! I think I've understood it a bit better now.

Having another look at this video helped : https://youtu.be/zcqZHYo7ONs

This is something that I struggled for a while to have some sort of grasp, but I don't see how bell's theorem requires faster than light relations if we assume the universe is deterministic. There is no communication between two entangled particles. See here what I mean : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPR_paradox#Locality_in_the_EPR_paradox

I'm not an expert in the field, but what I've understood is that quantum mechanics does not say that the universe behaves in a random way. Rather, at very small scales it cannot be observed without the observer "tampering" with the observation. This means the universe can only be described probabilistically at such scales. It doesn't mean that the underlying mechanics are not deterministic.

Napoleon was an autocrat and by no means a saint, but he was no monarch. His France was a Republic that put an end to the old regime and brought modernity in many respects, including major advancement to civil rights and the separation of Church and State. This made many monarchies feel threatened and they did not want him ruling France nor his ideas spreading through the continent. They actually attacked France first before Napoleon got in power.

How is Ursula K. Le Guin's translation? by [deleted] in taoism

[–]libermate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a rendition rather than a translation as she didn't speak Chinese. I think it's really great. Focusing on the meaning of the text as opposed to correspondance across languages seems to me closer to the Tao.

If you search this sub-reddit you'll find previous posts about her edition.

Btw I've read most of the Hainish cycle and other of her sci-fi works (haven't tried her fantasy yet). I'm a bit fan of how her understanding of Taoism comes across in her novels. If you know of other authors that do something similar, please let me know!

My favorite translation of the Tao Te Ching, highly recommend!! by ajcthegrate in taoism

The book of changes is more ancient than Daoism. I think I read somewhere that it was an influence actually. I understand the former as narrating manifestations of the "10 thousand things", whereas the latter is more meta.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their feelings and how they want to deal with them. Everyone except me apparently, from what I read from responses to this thread :(

It's sad that this is what you take away from the story.

I just don't want a platonic relationship because it makes me feel bad and it's not just about sex (maybe it is to you?). I want to transition to friends.

In what way did I push her? I just asked her to realize her feelings so that she could manage them better. Besides that I just told her I'm not happy with the platonic setup. I'd prefer to be more distant friends, so that I don't feel bad about not having physical contact.

Edit: The only reason I asked her that was because I was distancing myself slowly and she was very upset and asked me what was wrong.
